“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

(Earlier in the day I prepared the 7th envelope test for the session tonight. This time I picked a negative I had taken during our vacation in 1964 at York Beach, ME. The subject was the Driftwood Hotel, situated but a stone’s throw from the beach. This place has strong emotional attachments for Jane and me. It will be remembered that it was in the dancing room of the Driftwood that Jane and I saw the personality fragments we had ourselves created, on our vacation in York Beach in 1963. See the 9th session in Volume 1. We had this experience several months before these sessions began. See the sketch of the negative on page 255 of this Volume 4.

(Bill and Peggy Gallagher were witnesses for tonight’s session, and the session was held in our large front room. Traffic noise was not a problem, the windows being closed because of the cool night. Jane began speaking while sitting in her favorite Kennedy rocking chair. Her eyes were closed, her voice good but not loud, her pace a little fast. She used few pauses, and sat much of the time learning forward with her hands clasped before her and her head tilted down slightly. She began speaking at 8:59.)

(By now Jane’s accent, which might be termed a brogue of sorts, had become quite noticeable.)

(Jane smiled, then paused for emphasis.)

(Break at 9:20. Jane was dissociated as usual for a first delivery. Her eyes had remained closed. Her pace had picked up as time passed, and by break her delivery was quite fast and businesslike.

(Bill Gallagher voiced the thought that during delivery there is always a change in Jane’s face, but that he couldn’t articulate it. He said he has been aware of this since the first session he and Peggy witnessed, the 158th.

(Jane resumed while sitting down and with her eyes closed once more. Again her brogue was apparent, her voice good, her pace fast. Resume at 9:33.)

(Break at 9:57. Jane was quite well dissociated, she said. Her eyes had remained closed. Her pace had been fast, her voice good, with more than a touch of brogue at times.

(Bill Gallagher said that in his opinion Jane, when speaking as Jane, doesn’t move her facial muscles the same as Seth does. Seth forms his words more carefully and distinctly, Bill said, and this effort shows.

(Jane resumed in the same manner, again with her eyes closed, at 10:11.)

(Jane now paused and smiled. Her eyes opened. She looked at Bill Gallagher.)

(I missed it too, of course. My eyes are down most of the time as I write, although I have cultivated the habit of looking up at Jane quickly every sentence or so, as a matter of routine.

(Jane’s eyes were very dark, without highlights. She looked casually at the three of us.)

(Jane grinned and pointed at Bill.)

(Jane was now speaking to Peggy.)

(Our cat, Willy, had been sitting at the foot of Jane’s chair. As if by signal Willy now got up and walked toward Peggy, who sat but a few feet away. He brushed against her leg and she involuntarily jumped. The timing was perfect. We all laughed.)

(It was 10:23. The material had been so interesting that I had forgotten the time. I had planned to hand Jane the test envelope at about 10:00. Her eyes had been open up to this point, but she now closed them and sat waiting quietly while I handed the envelope to Bill; he passed it to Jane. She held it lightly in both hands, her eyes still closed.)

These will be impressions. I have the impression of four, f-o-u-r, of something. Of gray, of mood or color. (Pause. Jane shook her head as if in doubt.) The impression of a masterpiece of some kind in connection with what I hold. (Pause.) And something federal. (Pause.)

(Break at 10:28. Jane was dissociated as usual. She said she had no visual data during the material on the test; just the thought of the toothbrush and of herself. Her eyes remained closed until break.

(Peggy said that she watched me rather than Jane during the test, and that I did not betray by facial movement anything about whether Jane was doing well on the test, or not well.

(Jane resumed in the same good voice, and with her eyes closed, at 10:40.)

(I did not realize at the time that Seth did not explain the masterpiece statement; I could have asked otherwise. Jane’s manner now turned more humorous. Her eyes opened again. She smiled, and looked back and forth among the three of us as she spoke with quite a bit of animation.)

(Jane’s eyes had closed briefly. Now she looked at Peggy and smiled.)

(This little exchange was interesting to Jane and me. It will be remembered that Jane’s entity name is Ruburt, and that Seth refers to Ruburt as “he”; our interpretation of this being that Jane’s entity is male-oriented in the overall sense. Many sessions ago however Seth explained that this male or female orientation had little if anything to do with sex as we conceive it.

(Peggy’s entity name is Aniac, given by Seth in the 158th session. Seth has given little information on Peg’s entity, but his use of “he” evidently means that Peg’s entity, like Jane’s, is male-oriented.

(Jane now pointed at Bill.)

(This was a reference to Bill’s habit of closely scrutinizing Jane as she delivers the material.

(Jane’s voice abruptly rose in volume until it became very loud. I winced; the strong voice subsided quickly.)

(Jane turned to Bill.)

(Jane really blasted out the good evening.

(End at 10:50. Jane was dissociated as usual. It was evident that Seth enjoyed the exchange at the end of the session. Jane’s eyes remained open until the end.)
