SESSION 178

(On Thursday, August 12 we received a letter from Dr. Instream that was somewhat puzzling to us; in the letter he did not mention receiving the copy of the 175th session, which we mailed on August 5. The session contained some clairvoyant-telepathic material, presumably referring to Dr. Instream or people he knows, that we were interested in checking out.

(It will be remembered that in the 140th session Seth suggested Jane avoid psychological time for a while, after she had unwittingly gone too far, too fast. A week later Jane resumed psy-time on a reduced time basis. Now, even though she is back up to her regular half-hour, she has had no experiences to speak of since then. She has however had some rather startling clairvoyant experiences outside of psy-time.

(It was a very hot and humid evening and we held the session in our large front room, where we have a cooler. Because our windows were open traffic noise was rather bothersome to me. Jane spoke while sitting down and with her eyes closed. Her voice was quiet—too quiet as it developed. I had trouble hearing her, and shortly after she began speaking she hiked her chair closer to my table, and her voice acquired a little more volume. She used many pauses.)

We see that Ruburt is trying too hard outside of our sessions.

He is doing very well in our sessions. However in his psychological time experiments he is trying too hard. This leads to a constriction. We want an expansion.

He is not to worry concerning any investigations of our sessions. Affairs will be handled very naturally.

(Since Seth began discoursing on dream suggestion and health in the 172nd session, both Jane and I have been experimenting with these ideas. Jane has had quite a few interesting dreams since then, as a result of her suggestions.)

(The above passage refers to tests Jane uses on herself. Sometimes these involve Dr. Rhine’s Zener cards, sometimes objects sealed in envelopes, etc. Jane has not really extended herself in such tests, mostly due to a lack of time. She is interested in learning what other abilities she may have, however, outside of these sessions.)

Ruburt does allow himself this freedom, until he begins to brood about it. We will begin slowly to further develop his abilities in our sessions. We may even ourselves initiate such a program.

I am not primarily concerned with effects, as you know. They can be beneficial however from several viewpoints, and they can also give Ruburt confidence. Any such effects however will happen within the framework of our sessions, and we must always work in an atmosphere of mutual integrity.

We will discuss for some sessions the nature of dreams, practically speaking, from many viewpoints. Other suggestions will be given for general benefit. I hope in the future to make these points clear enough so that you will be able to discover definite connections where you have not before, that will tie in waking and dreaming situations with rather surprising results.
