(It might be interesting to digress a moment to discuss the point raised by Seth in the last paragraph. I believe he is referring here to an experience of mine. As far as I can recall, this was the first time I became consciously aware that a dream could influence waking action.
(On Tuesday night, June 22, I had five dreams which I wrote in my dream notebook the next morning. Dream number five was a very short one, in color. In it I found myself approaching a certain traffic light in my car. I was on a side street, two blocks from the printing plant where I work. In the dream I sat waiting for some little time for the light to turn green, giving me access to the main highway, Lake Street. I seldom take this route in actuality, since this particular light is set to favor the heavy flow of traffic on Lake Street. Anyone approaching it as I did in my dream can wait for up to a couple of minutes for it to change.
(As usual, after writing down the dream upon arising I promptly forgot it. I left the house for work. Sometimes I drive to work by different routes, for variety. On this particular morning, June 23, I did so. I then found myself traveling down this particular side street, approaching the light in question, but without remembering the dream to this moment.
(When I was a few car lengths from the light, the dream suddenly popped into my mind. Just as in the dream, I found myself stopping for a red light. The effect was so startling that I at once began to wonder whether it was possible to act out dream suggestions in waking life. My self-questioning was particularly intriguing because I could have chosen from a half-dozen routes to work; yet I had picked a course that enabled me to act out the dream of the night before, while not being consciously aware of the dream.)
Suggestions made by the waking personality are also carried out by the sleeping self. The characteristics of the sleeping personality therefore partially determine the physical existence of the waking self. Solutions to problems are sought and received and worked for in the dream state. The physical environment is directly affected then by the activities of the dreaming self.
Abilities unused by the waking personality are utilized in the dream state. A study of dream activities will often allow the waking personality to recognize abilities of which it is not aware, to discover talents that are not being used. Such a study can be most beneficial in allowing the personality to utilize all of its capabilities. There is no doubt that the whole self is a composite formed by the various aspects of the personality as it is seen in the waking and dream states, and at other levels of operation.

By far the most immediately helpful suggestions have to do with dream therapy, with problem solving, and the search for abilities as shown within the dream state.
The energy used in constructing dreams is every bit as intense as the energy used in the waking state, but there is no depletion because the sleeping self uses energy more naturally, realizing that it is available, and being more free in its operation.

This is one of the reasons why health suggestions given immediately before sleep are so effective. Incidentally, they are excellent practice. Expectation can also aid you. In this case suggestions should be given leading to dreams in which a desired situation is accomplished. The dream will then increase and activate your own expectations. And as you know, the expectations themselves have much to do with whether or not any given situation will occur.
