This does not involve however a change of focus in depth. A change to a different level entirely occurs when the individual switches focus from physical reality to other realities. In the dream state obviously we have an example of such change. One of the main reasons why this is possible within the dream state, rather than in the waking state, is that survival necessities have usually been satisfied.

(Jane now took what I term a long pause, lasting about a minute. Her pace had been slow; the above paragraph had been broken by many shorter pauses.)

Such a change of focus demands a concentration in one area to the exclusion, as a rule, of other areas. In the waking state you are usually not aware of your dreaming existence. In your dreaming existence your physical environment is replaced by your dream environment. You react to both environments whenever you are concentrated within them. Our study of the dream state will take us into many other discussions, for you will learn much about the nature of uncamouflaged reality.

Flowers somewhere, in a vase or outside a window, I don’t know. (Jane shook her head.) There seems to be something about a radio. I do not know to what this refers. A letter to you. Some cautiousness in it because of indecision, though the cautiousness may or may not be apparent.

(Jane now emphasized that where she would have “stiffened up” earlier, she now feels it foolish to let the fear of failure block what might be good material. Her attitude now is that if she is wrong once, perhaps she’ll do better the next time.

(In a drowsy state, I lay on my left side with my arms loosely crossed over my chest. I began to feel the enlargement first in my hands, then across my chest. This time I was alert as to what was happening at the first signs, and tried to encourage it without making any strenuous effort of will.
