(He died on November 5, 1976, while at home with us. The courageous acquiescence of his death made us feel humble and ignorant — and in awe of nature’s mysteries — because certainly Willy died with a kind of absolute trust that people find most difficult to achieve. I buried him in the backyard. Now seldom do we go in or out of the driveway without glancing at the group of rocks I placed upon his grave.

(The weekend following Willy’s death, though, Jane insisted that we get a “new” kitten at once. She was afraid that if we didn’t, she, at least, would never have another pet — so we found “Willy Two” at an area humane society. He’s so small, he still almost fits in just one of my hands. During this evening’s session, he slept curled up on the couch beside me.

(Seth opened the session by finishing his Introduction to Jane’s The World View of Paul Cézanne, which Prentice-Hall will publish later this year. In that piece Seth has come through with an excellent capsule explanation of his theory of “world views.” He sees Jane’s book as a prime example of what can be done in that area.
