You will have to give us time… (Pause, one of many.) When a man’s consciousness, for example, blended with that of a tree, those data became “visual” for others to perceive. When a man’s consciousness merged with an animal’s, that blending became visual data also.

A man, wondering what a tree was like, became one, and let his own consciousness flow into the tree. Man’s consciousness mixed and merged with other kinds of consciousness with the great curiosity of love. A child did not simply look at an animal, but let its consciousness merge with the animal’s, and so to some extent the animal looked out through the child’s eyes.

(Long pause.) In ways most difficult to explain, man “absorbed” an animal’s spirit before he killed it, so that the spirit of the animal merged with his own. In using the animal’s flesh, then, the hunter believed that he was giving the animal a new focus of existence. He could draw on the animal’s strength, and the animal could join in human consciousness. Nature and spirit therefore were one.

(A two-minute pause at 10:22. The last paragraph of material may give clues to human behavior today: Man kills animals — and eats them — for reasons he’s consciously forgotten. His killing today would be based on at least intuitive understanding…. One wonders whether the same reasoning might apply when man kills man….)

Your own kind of focus emerged from such a background, so that within yourselves you contain myriad consciousnesses of which you are unaware. Through your own particular focus, the consciousnesses of the natural world merged to form a synthesis in which, for example, symphonies can emerge. You act not only for yourselves, but also for other kinds of consciousness that you have purposefully forgotten. In following your own purposes, which are yours, you also serve the purposes of others you have forgotten.

(Long pause at 10:37.) As a species “you” sought certain kinds of experience. Individually, and as tribes or nations, you follow certain “progressions” — and yet in so doing you act also on the part of the whole of nature. You take into your bodies in transmuted form the consciousnesses of all the things you consume.

(10:41.) Those consciousnesses then merge to perceive the world in a fashion you call your own. Through your eyes the beasts, vegetables, birds, and dust perceive the dawn and sunlight as you do — as you, and yet on the other hand your experience is your own.

In a manner of speaking he approached other thresholds of perception, and with my help translated those data into the material given. He felt as if he had been on a long journey — and he was, though it was not a conscious one in the terms you recognize. The training that connects your visual and verbal culture prevents full translation, but Ruburt was putting together, with my help, information not usually available. There are gaps in your awareness that are actually filled with data, and Ruburt was letting these pool up, so to speak. He will become more proficient, but for that reason I will now end the session.

He feels as if his consciousness were stretched out of shape in a certain way, as muscles might be if you used them in a new manner.

Let him rest. he has become aware of distances in his own consciousness, in a fashion difficult to describe. Neurologically he became familiar to some extent with the stuff beneath language, the inner rhythms unexpressed, and felt the odd connections that exist between words and your sense of time. This confused him, for this was material directly felt but verbally inexpressible. He will readjust “in no time.”

(11:25 P.M. “I just feel funny,” Jane said, “as if I’ve been where it was too smooth for my consciousness to get a grip on anything.” It wasn’t easy for her to put her feelings into words. “Yet I feel as though I’ve been doing things there — perceiving in a different way while Seth was giving the session.” She also felt that Seth had translated some of those now-forgotten experiences into the session’s material.
