[...] I told you also that these sessions exist on many other levels of activity, so the sessions are translated directly into the body itself, correcting old errors, for example, and helping the body thus to clear itself of old debris. [...]
[...] At 3:22, after a cigarette, she began to move most portions of her body in a generalized program of exercise—head off the pillow, arms, shoulders and feet, legs [to a lesser degree] and hips. [...]
(Pause.) I told you some time ago that miracles were simply nature unimpeded, and Ruburt is learning to give his nature freedom, so that it can follow the greater ways of its own knowledge —therefore freeing his body so that it can behave in a more natural and normal fashion. [...]
I am not comparing the body to a computer—but in a fashion it is as if Ruburt were reprogramming himself, with help from higher echelons of his being, so that a kind of new and more effective and beneficial organization is being activated, in which old errors were cancelled, and new knowledge is inserted. [...]
Psycho-Cybernetics worked well for a time, because at that stage the book served to break up body beliefs, though he hadn’t tackled the reasons behind them. [...] They were dropped for several reasons, but mainly because he still did not understand that body beliefs were involved, and that these like the others could be changed.
[...] This in itself however was an advance, and it served to bring up the fact that these were body beliefs.
(10:26.) When you tackle these body beliefs directly you will, literally, be surprised at the results. [...]
Your dreams and the physical events of your lives constantly alter the chemical balances within your body. [...] It will mobilize your resources and fill your body with a rush of needed hormones, creating a dream state of stress that will bring the organism’s healing abilities into combat and result in an end to particular physical symptoms.
Now: Dictation: There are natural feedback systems within the body and psyche that operate to set up optimum frameworks of balance, in which your growth and development can take place. [...]
[...] In one way, a state of grace or illumination happens where there is the greatest poised balance of the conscious mind with other levels of the psyche and body — a biological and spiritual recognition of the individual’s wholeness within himself and his relationship with the universe at large.
(9:45.) When your body and mind are working together then the relationship between the two goes smoothly, and their natural therapeutic systems place you in a state of health and grace. [...]
[...] The body is responding, and the activation is general and entire. [...] But you can also determine to use your own creativity, and your own faith in the body’s efforts and power to combat such episodes.
[...] The body itself did not experience those sensations as at all frightening or uncomfortable, but as stretching readjustments. [...]
Many of the sensations or stages that are definitely considered negative at such times, and certainly appear so in your experience, are the result of misunderstandings because of ingrained beliefs about body behavior, or the result of your lack of confidence. [...]
(10:01.) Augustus Two, you see, believes that his body is nearly invincible, and following this belief the body does perform much better. [...]
[...] The messages sent to the body are not in the least contradictory. The body is under excellent control.
For the body of Augustus is once again under the sway of beliefs about himself that are highly contradictory. [...] Now as Augustus he is alternately strong and weak, and the body stresses are apparent. [...]
Here then is a case where directly opposing beliefs dominated the conscious mind at various times, each operating the body in its own manner. Physically the body has the same capacity for strength regardless of which group of ideas were dominant; but practically speaking, Augustus One was incapable of performing the feats of Augustus Two.
[...] Those notions, and that attempt, signaled that he wanted more activity, and the body began new work in that direction. Hips, knees, legs and feet are all involved, and to a lesser extent the upper portions of his body. Muscles and ligaments and joints loosened, but this could not be accomplished without certain bodily sensations, without certain imbalances, as the body tried to bring about another adjustment and alignment. [...]
Because he has not built up the good trust of his body, however, any new discomfort, regardless of origin, alarms him—an alarm that causes him to tense his muscles, withhold his weight, become hesitant—actions that of course themselves bring about stress, and prolong what should be a fairly minor adjustment. [...] Remember, he did not have your background of physical trust in the body. [...]
3. My body’s natural safety is the result of its built-in agility, its ability to relax, to let go, to move and respond. [...]
[...] While this was going on, I lost all contact with my body in the living room. [...] Yet while this was happening, my physical body sat upright in the rocker, speaking without pause as Seth:
[...] Over the railing, a small body of water was visible, and beyond this there was a much larger body of water, an ocean, I thought. [...]
I started the autumn of 1965, then, with high hopes, particularly because of the two out-of-body episodes mentioned earlier in this chapter. [...] If they turned out even half as good as the out-of-body data, I thought, we’d still be getting off to a great start.
CHAPTER
SEVEN:
Out-of-Body Episodes—
I Pop into a Taxi
While My Body Stays at Home
I have told you that your body knows how to grow, and surely that much should be obvious. The body knows which cells to activate and so forth, and how. In the same fashion your mind knows what thoughts are best for it to think, for it knows the great capacity of the individual human mental processes, and it “works” for mental and psychic fulfillment even as the body “works” for physical fulfillment.
Your mind is equipped with a certain mental understanding, as your body is equipped with an automatic physical understanding of its nature in relationship with the environment. [...] Beneath this, there are other communications, not consciously recorded, so that the body reacts to temperature, air pressure, and so forth, and reacts accordingly.
[...] I wondered whether her body didn’t want to ingest the stronger stuff because it didn’t feel it necessary, etc.
[...] For various reasons not to be gone into here, your people have learned not to trust their bodies or their minds. [...]
[...] She only had to get out of the way of her own body’s natural ability to heal itself. I was amazed at the way her body was still trying to right itself after all of these years. How cruel we could be to ourselves, I thought, and this reminded me of my old questions about why the body consciousness itself didn’t just rebel at times and refuse to let itself be so beaten down by erroneous beliefs. [...]
[...] Those bouts, however, helped rid him of buried feelings, and his determination did indeed give the body’s immune system a greater thrust. The improvements noted yesterday and today show the body’s abilities, and demonstrate its own intent toward greater movement and flexibility.
(I told Jane that now that the fever business was on the way out, I expected to see her body continue its improvements, as obviously it was trying to do. Her new motions were a good sign of the body’s incredible strivings to express itself.
Through all of this, however, the body is responding, and it is indeed quickening the healing processes. [...]
He needs you at times to remind him that he can trust the body’s ancient wisdom—otherwise he would be in as good physical condition as you are. The body is an artistic creation, and in certain terms you create many bodies, each one perfectly mirroring your beliefs. [...]
Any and all of his doubts can be alleviated by the complete realization that he can indeed trust the physician within, and the ancient wisdom of the body. [...]
Despite that, Ruburt’s body is improving, but the rate of improvement mirrors your individual and joint beliefs. [...]
Now: Very briefly, I want to congratulate Ruburt on the Rembrandt book, and to reassure him that that same creative energy is healing his body as surely as it has written books. [...] Let him realize that (emphatically), and the healing energy can more freely circulate through his physical body—with results as astounding as his books are! [...]
The improvements in Ruburt’s arms are a sign of the body’s response following the arousal of hope and faith. [...]
(Pause.) The body has begun its renewal process, which has always been present, only slowed down, or momentarily suspended. [...]
Specifically, I wanted to make the point that the body’s actions are unfortunately often misread and misunderstood. The body often clears out, or tries out, its own processes — perhaps by being feverish for several days, and then by lowering the temperature once unwanted materials are burned out, so to speak.
Most such material is indeed given at a later date, though not always under the same heading or category, and often wound into another body of material.
[...] When the body is basically held in distrust, however, all such behavior is considered dangerous and suspect. [...]
[...] “So if you followed his stuff,” I said after supper, when I was getting ready to leave, “you wouldn’t have taken the antibiotics, and the body would have taken care of itself.” [...]
[...] I want to stress that nothing is wrong with Ruburt’s physical body except for applied tension. [...] The entire body is releasing tension. [...] The massager is very beneficial now, for his body is pliable enough now to respond—but more, as he used it recently the intent to relax is there. [...]
Ruburt must realize that his power and energy can, and indeed is, changing his body for the better. [...]
Ruburt’s entire body is more pliable. [...]
[...] He should not concentrate upon his body.
[...] The new body is of course not a new body at all, but simply a body not physical in your terms, one that you use in astral projections, one that gives the vitality and strength to the physical body that you know.
[...] When you leave the physical body, the other body is quite as real to you, and seems as physical, although it has many more freedoms. You can do things with it that you cannot do with the physical body, for example.
Peg is delighted with this body, particularly in comparing it with the physical one. She is trying to cut off any identification with the physical body, whether it be alive or dead in your terms.
Your beliefs tell you, again, that the body is primarily a mechanism—a most amazing machine, but a machine (louder), without its own purpose, without any intent, a mindless assembly plant of assorted parts that simply happened to grow together in a certain prescribed fashion. [...] To that extent it does admit (underlined) that the machine of the body “intends” to insure its own survival—but a survival which has no meaning beyond itself. And because [the body] is a machine, it is expected to decay after so much usage.
Your Olympics,2 on television, present you with evidence of the great capacity of the young human body. [...] (Pause.) You believe that the greatest training and discipline must be used to bring about such activity—but that seemingly extraordinary physical ability simply represents the inherent capacities of the human body. In those cases, the athletes through training are finally able to give a glimpse of the body’s spontaneous abilities. [...]
[...] There was a greater and greater body of knowledge to be transmitted as physical existence continued, for they did not transmit private knowledge only, but the entire body of knowledge that belonged to the group as a whole.”
[...] You are presented now, in the world, with a certain picture of a body and its activities, and that picture seems (underlined) very evidential. [...]
These two groups, by the ears, tightened up in the manner of pulleys, affecting all areas of the body downward. The action of the pulleys was not symmetrical, however, so that the two sides of the body were out of balance. [...]
The difference between the two sides of his body—the slowness and entire stance—began initially with tension in the head and jaw area, and the considerable tightening of large groups of ligaments and muscles in the neck particularly.
That pulley affects the shoulders and arms particularly, and the stature of the upper portion of the body actually caused the bent knees. [...]
All of your physical experience must, of course, be pivoted in the corporeal reality of the body. [...] Through your own thoughts you direct the body’s expression, and it can be of health or of illness. Out of a knowledge of the contents of your own conscious mind you can definitely heal most maladies of the body, within conditions to be given later.
(10:42.) If you identify with your body alone, then you may feel that life after death is impossible. [...] Know that later you will still operate through another form, but that the body and the material world are your present modes of expression.
In all of this the body’s situation is highly agitated, and the physical organism is forced to respond as best it can to a series of disastrous events — which, however, it realizes it cannot be experiencing physically. [...] There is a great wear and tear on the body, and an inexcusable exhaustion of its native energies.
Ideas form reality, so the body is used to reacting to some “imaginary” situations in which, for example, the mind conjures up dire circumstances which do not physically exist; but these still force the organism into an over-activation, setting up a state of stress. In massive drug therapy the body feels in greatest threat, for it is forced to use all of its resources while its own signals tell it that the messages it is getting do not have a correlation — and yet they are of the most urgent nature.
Jane’s consciousness had left her sleeping body in the bedroom and traveled to her writing room at the back of the house. She’d encountered me there, in my own out-of-body state, and we engaged in a very animated conversation. Afterward she insisted that I’d been out-of-body too, although I have no conscious memory of such an event. [...]
[...] The out-of-body was the result of a change in attitude, and made possible also because of his (Ruburt’s) body’s relaxation. [...]
[...] “Do you want to say something about the little out-of-body Jane had this noon?”
You were mentally wandering through the house, the both of you, and Ruburt caught himself where his mind was—only his physical body was not in the same place. [...]
The great communication system within the body itself is dependent, then, upon the constant inner flux and flow of these units. On one level the body’s very survival is largely determined by the units’ propensities for selectivity and significance. Also, however, the body’s physical reality is a seeming constant in a seemingly constant physical existence.
At no time, as a rule, is your body not here to you. [...] In a manner of speaking, your bodies blink off and on like lights. [...]
[...] If you become ill, say, you may wonder why, and yet once illness has happened it becomes part of the body’s reality, and seems almost like an inevitable part of its experience.
[...] Although the body appears permanent and in existence from one moment to the next, basically it constantly rises out of the bed of probabilities, hovering at your now-point of perception and experience, and its apparent stability is dependent upon the knowledge of “future” probabilities as well as “past” ones.
