Very soon after that initial revelation, Jane and I began the actual sessions when we sat with a Ouija board on December 2, 1963. [...] Yet the board had played its part. One can even say that Jane’s basic intuitive knowledge of idea construction led us to use the board in the first place.

We’d borrowed the board from our landlord, James Spaziani, who hadn’t had any success using it with his family. He was to later just give us the board. [...]

Jane had read about the Ouija board and expressed casual interest in it, but hadn’t tried to obtain one; nor was there a local supplier. What conscious and unconscious communications, we were to wonder, had led her to mention the board to Jimmy? [...]

In fact, he had to dig the board out of his cluttered attic to give to us. [...] We didn’t even have to order a board!

(We began as usual by sitting at the board. [...] Although we took the first few answers through the board, from the beginning Jane received them within also. [...]

(Seated at the board, we touched our hands to the pointer. [...]

[...] He also contacted you once through the (Ouija) board. [...]

(We had forgotten that several years ago we had contacted Otis through the Ouija board.)

(We sat at the Ouija board as usual.

Imagine the vision on the board, forming itself and evolving outward into physical reality, and let your fine technical abilities simply help the vision flow outward.

Imagine the inner vision flowing through your mind outward freely onto your board. [...]

[...] (Pause.) They used the board in the kitchen. [...]

[...] Jane’s hesitancy here reminds me of her hesitancy in the beginning sessions, when it early became apparent that she was receiving the answers to questions mentally, even though we were using the Ouija board. She did not want to dispense with the board for some time.

[...] The words yes and no, spelled out on the board, are here enclosed in parenthesis whenever the pointer moved to them. Answers Jane received mentally before the board spelled them out, are indicated by *.

(Again, this is a Ouija board experiment Jane and I conducted on Sunday, July 19, 1964, at 10:45 PM.

[...] To begin we sat at the board as usual, fingers on the pointer. Seth spelled out his greeting on the board but Jane began to receive him within immediately. [...]

(Sitting at the board, we used the pointer to say good night.

[...] And our friend, Ned, for all his troubles with your draft board, is quite well aware of the nature of existence and joy, but it is because you are so well aware of it that you become so desperate in the field of reality in which you are presently focused, and you must find a way to give that joy and freedom a release in the reality in which you are presently focused. (To Joel.) Now, our friend here has taken his first steps from the diving board and his brave friend here is afraid that he will drown. [...]

[...] In the twenty-seventh session, February 19, 1964, Seth told us we could dispense with the Ouija board completely. [...]

[...] For one thing, you may dispense with the board. [...]

Rob smiled, amused by Seth’s rather cavalier advice to keep the board. [...]

It was Session 28, February 24, 1964 and our second session without the board. [...]

(Marian and Jimmy have known about the sessions since they began; indeed it was with their Ouija board that we began to experiment. [...]

[...] This woven texture was another reason for my buying canvas, rather than smooth boards for instance, such as Masonite.

(The tack holes running along one edge of the object resulted from the canvas first being tacked to a sheet of board, then wet so that pre-shrinking would take place before the gluing process.

[...] Making a change in the present of a certain kind will automatically alter all beliefs “across the board,” so to speak. [...]

The parallel lines and the tree did refer to the wooden boards of the wall, which are obviously parallel, each board being distinct and clear.

[...] Jane liked the man so much I put it up on the bulletin board—not easy, since it isn’t framed.

[...] My introductory notes contain a reference to Jane and me borrowing a Ouija board from our landlord “in the fall of 1963,” which compares with the date given by Seth this evening, of September 10,1963. The notes refer to our attempts to use the board early in November 1963 also, without success.)

[...] The color of the porous paper or board is a typical light beige or tan, not resembling metal, and certainly not heavy in weight for its size. [...]

[...] The physical being simply uses the physical system as a checking board.

[...] I write ‘were’ out of habit, because I have this delightful feeling that my printing, writing, and newspaper interests now are what led me to be drawn to the same things back then, even as my work there caused me to be interested in the same things now — an exchange across the board.

Even the poorer peasants and farmers bought portraits of themselves, however, from perhaps less gifted artists, and many unknowns took payment for portraits in the form of room and board, and painted all the more slowly.
