First of all, briefly, an answer to your second question.

(This gave rise to another question, which I did not ask but will note here: Seth has said on occasion that Jane was too close, too emotionally involved with data to answer clearly, and that it is then best to wait. [...]

[...] “I wish I hadn’t said it,” she commented wryly, after I remarked that we hadn’t pushed for any answers from Seth; or even asked any questions about the dream book specifically, before the session.

[...] (Half humorously.) Now he thinks he should answer the phone every time it rings. And answer the door every time anyone knocks. He thinks he is afraid to have people see him in poor shape, and so does not want to answer the door. [...]

Much of Jane’s trance material on how individuals use dreams personally came through in answer to a question of mine that we’d often speculated about lately: If most people do not remember their dreams most of the time, of what use can their dreams be to them? [...] Here are quotations from the answers Jane gave while in trance:

[...] Jane received an answer for this question too, and noted it down on her own. The pointer however, hesitated over several numbers in giving the Pipers an answer, so the results here are inconclusive.

(Being tired from the session, Jane did not pursue the thing any further, and we let the Pipers alone while they received several more answers. But Jane and I plan to repeat this experiment with other couples, while we observe and see if either of us can pick up, in some fashion, answers the pointer will give.)

[...] I took down the answers the Pipers obtained, and Jane was an observer.

(Jane did get a few answers, and was able to hold the pendulum better in her left hand than she’d thought she could. First she received no answer when she asked if she had a clear road to using her abilities. Then came the answer, “No.” [...]

(4:35 p.m. “It wasn’t terribly vivid,” Jane said about her experience, after I’d read the session to her, “but it was noticeable enough to be noticed — you know what I mean?” I said that in the session she’d effectively answered her own questions about the experience. [...]

[...] Seth answered my questions and while he was giving his general answer, other related questions would creep into my mind and these would immediately be answered by Seth. This happened so frequently that towards the end of the session, when I would think of a question I would have immediate confidence that it would be subsequently answered.

If I am answering your friend’s question in a roundabout manner it is only because, my dear Joseph—and I still call you my dear Joseph, although you scarcely deserve it—then it is only because there are things that I feel it is necessary that I clear up before the question can be answered with even a hint of correctness.

[...] John Bradley reported that Seth as he went along began to answer each question he—John—thought of as soon as it came to mind. [...]

[...] The question is much more easily asked than answered. [...] I will attempt to give you a practical answer to what you think of as this practical question, however. [...]

Quite practically speaking, there is no one answer, for each of you is an individual. Generally speaking, of course, there is an answer that will serve to cover main issues of this experience, but the kinds of deaths have much to do with the experience that consciousness undergoes. [...]

I will answer the questions in those terms also, then; but before I do so, there are several seemingly impractical considerations concerning the nature of life and death, with which we must deal.

[...] Usually she received the answer within before the board spelled it out. She did not hear the answer within yet did know what the answer would be. [...]

(Long pause, one of many.) You are after the answers to many questions. In the meantime you have no guarantee that the answers will be found, for the questions themselves constantly evolve, and yet you are of course always in the process of examining the material that you have, and seeing how it applies or does not apply to the world as you know it. [...]

The official world has its answers, methods, philosophy, standards, all set. [...]

[...] When I answered that the material seemed clear enough, she said that it concerned something that didn’t come out in the session. [...]

On the one hand all of your questions have their answers. The inner self knows, but the immediate self does not recognize their answers. [...]

On the one hand, again, you know the answers. [...]

[...] The intuitions and the intellect are meant to challenge and develop each other, and intuitional knowledge and intellectual knowledge will ultimately lead to the same answers.

[...] This is more difficult because of Ruburt’s lack of mathematical vocabulary, and the fact that conceptual patterns were given in intuitive mathematical language—not in a precise narrow range at all, and answering deeper questions than those asked. Nevertheless the answers to the particular questions are inherent within the material given, I believe, and become obvious by reference.

[...] We didn’t think subconscious fabrication was the answer, or that a total lack of control on Jane’s part was involved. [...]

[...] I am on my way to answering one of your questions—

—and you have every good reason to want your answers.

[...] I can verbalize some answers for you, and I try to do so, but through direct experience and through opening yourselves up you will receive direct knowledge even though you may not be able to verbalize it later. [...] At times you fill the atmosphere, as you think of it, with questions and with noise and you demand answers. [...]

[...] And what happens after death?” In a recent session Seth answered these questions. Many of the answers apply to death in general, so I’ll include some excerpts from this session in the next chapter, and also go into Seth’s ideas on reincarnation more thoroughly.

Some of the answers cropped up in readings given for others, where Seth was dealing with specific cases. [...]

[...] I don’t believe that there can be any single answer or blanket explanation, but we have had two readings involving such children, and I can give you the explanations offered in these specific instances.
