(Pause.) Here, however, the “deception” brought about certain difficulties. Not only was Augustus Two more sexually promiscuous, but by contrast Augustus One seemed very pallid indeed. Augustus Two was originally intended to help Augustus One. It’s true that the exotic conditions spilled over, casting some glamour on Augustus One when Augustus Two left for a time, but the contrast was too blatant, too out in the open. Augustus One, still the primary personality, became even more frightened. He knew that gradually Augustus Two was outliving his purpose, showing him up, and had to go.

His beliefs in his unworthiness prevented him from using his abilities, or even pursuing a course of effective action, with any persistence. It was then that Augustus Two began to assert himself — and to Augustus’s wife. In his own way Augustus Two would prove to her that she was married to quite an unusual, powerful man, a paragon of virility and strength; but to do so Augustus One must appear as Augustus Two to her. This continued for some time. Augustus One would first develop a splitting headache, and then this alien from outer space would arrive: the commanding male that Augustus One was not.

Augustus Two has not taken over now for two and one-half months. Augustus is in a dilemma, for he still holds intact the beliefs in his own powerlessness, and the contradictory beliefs of omnipotence are not now being expressed through Augustus Two. Yet expressed they will be; and so in the interview Augustus One — who we will now simply call Augustus — at one moment came through with his gigantic belligerence, staring at Ruburt and telling him that he could annihilate anyone who hurt him. In the next moment the great plea for help would surface, the love of his wife and child. In one sentence Augustus would make a statement, and ten minutes later make it clear with another remark that the first fact had not been true.

It has taken some courage for him to let Augustus Two vanish. Because the neat division of beliefs no longer exists, however, he will seem even more difficult to his wife since the characteristics of Augustus Two now “bleed into” his own. He will lie for example where before only Augustus Two lied.

(The objects for the 57th envelope experiment were two leaves taken from our poinsettia plant. [...] We see it every day of course but I was sure Jane wasn’t aware of these two specific leaves separately. [...] I taped the leaves to one of the two pieces of Bristol used in these experiments, sandwiched it against the other piece, then sealed the two in the usual double envelopes. [...]

[...] In 1961, shortly after we had moved to Elmira, a friend with whom Jane worked at an art gallery gave her two poinsettia plants that we had for several years. This is easily remembered because the two 1961 plants are the only other poinsettias we have ever owned. We have for instance never bought a poinsettia plant for ourselves, or as a gift, etc.; the two 1961 plants and the plant which furnished the objects for tonight constitute the only three poinsettias we have been involved with. [...]

(My first question asked Seth for more data about the two horizontal lines. [...] “I have the impression of two dark horizontal lines, one rather toward the top and one rather toward the bottom.” [...] As explained, this meant the spines of the two leaves were also roughly horizontal to the floor and her insight. [...]

(Long pause.) In form two, you will not as a rule encounter any subconscious phantoms, and usually you make the change to form two from the state in which form one is used. [...]

[...] But in your terms, Seth Two is far further divorced from my reality than I am from Ruburt’s. You can imagine Seth Two as a future portion of me if you prefer, and yet far more is involved.

(9:18.) My own reincarnational personalities, probable selves, and even Seth Two exist within me now, as I exist within them. In your terms, Seth Two is more advanced. [...]

I am alive in Seth Two’s memory, as a self from which he sprang. [...] Only your rigid ideas of time and consciousness make these statements seem strange to you; for in a larger context, again, I can remember Seth Two. [...]

(Long pause.) Seth Two is familiar with an entirely different set of symbols and meanings, so that, in this case, two translations are being given — one by me and one by Ruburt.

(With Seth’s help Jane first encountered the idea of Seth Two in the 406th session for April 22, 1968. That important development in her abilities took place four and a half years after she began to speak for Seth, and once it opened up Seth Two came through in the next seven twice-weekly sessions. Most of that material hasn’t been published, although in Chapter 17 of The Seth Material Jane described Seth Two to some extent, including “his, hers, or its” intimate connections with Seth: the subjective pyramid or cone effects she experiences just above her head when contacting Seth Two; and the great energy she feels at such times. In Chapter 17 she quoted Seth Two from sessions 406–7, and from a couple of others that were held later in the year. The excerpts show not only something of Seth’s connections on the “other side” of Jane, but in one case her violent reactions of surprise and panic when she attempted to translate something of Seth Two’s reality in terms of our own camouflage world: She found herself deeply involved in an unexpected experience with “massiveness” — one of the subjects I want to refer to in these preliminary notes. And Seth Two — or our imperfect grasp of what such an energy gestalt can mean or represent — comprises at least one of the sources of the Seth material itself.

(Seth Two wasn’t dealt with in Volume 1 of “Unknown” Reality. In Note 1 for Appendix 18, I wrote that I wanted to at least briefly discuss Seth Two in another appendix for this Volume 2, “the idea being that that material can be taken as an extension of the Jane-Ruburt-Seth study presented here.” The few references to Seth Two in Appendix 18 were all meant to be resolved below, including my note that “Seth Two exists in relation to Seth in somewhat the same manner that Seth does to Jane, although that analogy shouldn’t be carried very far.”

(Following those introductory sessions, Seth Two has spoken at widely spaced intervals. [...] Occasionally Jane will speak for Seth Two in class. I do think that she could contact Seth Two at my request. Yet she has to get into a “certain mental climate” in order to reach Seth Two, Jane said, and all of her other trance phenomena — Sumari, and so forth — are also related to that state.¹

(Unlike Seth, Seth Two has never been physical in our terms, and only partially comprehends our reality even while helping to form it. Very quickly, and perhaps simplifying too much, here’s Seth Two from the 407th session, speaking in Jane’s high, distant, deliberate and asexual interpretation of what such an energy gestalt’s “voice” might sound like:)

3. Suppose now that one card in the stack represents a living, intelligent, two-dimensional being at some moment in time. Because “he” is two-dimensional “he” sees dimensions in his plane, as we three-dimensional beings can see in our three dimensions. [...]

1. Picture a stack of cards comparable in size, let us say, to playing cards and stacked two or three feet high. [...]

4. Suppose further that the next card below represents the same two-dimensional being a moment earlier. [...]

6. If this two-dimensional being, through psychic ability were able to project himself into other levels of his existence (the stack) he could see his “future” and that of other beings in nearby stacks. [...]

[...] On the 19th we received from our publisher for checking, the proofs of the index for Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality, then two days later the proofs for the front matter of Psyche arrived. Going over these two sets of material was routine; nothing had to be returned, and in each case Jane called Tam Mossman at Prentice-Hall to give her approval and to make a few suggestions for changes. [...] Jane has held four sessions since the 14th: two personal ones, and two [842-43] on matters other than book dictation.

[...] It seems that through a combination of mechanical failures and human error, unit 2, one of the plant’s two nuclear reactors, overheated and discharged radioactive water into the river, and began releasing small amounts of radioactive gasses into the atmosphere. [...]

[...] It would hardly be a coincidence, I added, that the mass events at Jonestown and Three Mile Island took place within less than six months of each other, and that they represented the two poles, or extremes, of mankind’s present main belief systems: religion and science.

[...] This rather unusual situation came about because after lunch today she wrote excellent analyses of two dreams I’d had recently. [...]

[...] There were two points I wanted to make. The development of which I spoke involved two students who are not now so involved. [...] I also expect another member of the class to come awake in the dream state and to do very well after two years. [...]

If probabilities continue, then two of you will develop quite well during this year in two quite different areas. [...]

([Another class member:] “No, it has been two years for some of us.”)

[...] Two of its corners are beveled but hardly round. [...] Jane had one of her images here, seeing mentally two small objects in a space resembling the usual envelopes; she saw no detail however.

(First Question: “Are you saying there are two objects in the envelope?” Answer: “Or represented on a single object.” Only one item comprised the envelope object, but we don’t know how particularly to break down this single item to comprise two objects. [...]

(Question: “Can you say something about the five people?” “Three females and two males.” [...] The next two questions also develop this particular data begun on page 289. [...]

[...] I enclosed it between two pieces of Bristol, then inserted this into the usual double envelopes. [...]

[...] Two points arose worth noting.

(Regarding “Two children”, interpreted on page 22. [...]

[...] We now learned that Barbara had taken another child along also—for a total of two. [...]

[...] On the visit to Story Book Land with the two children, Barbara also visited the display for Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. [...]

When the two of you work with Framework 2 then, say, Jane one and Rob one can help each other help Jane two and Rob two also, so that you add to your benefits. [...]

[...] When Rob two and Jane two are overemphasized, then you both add to each others difficulties. When the two natural people are largely in operation, then you are able to help each other in an easier and more spontaneous fashion. [...]

[...] The two do go hand in hand. [...]

(About the children: Two boys in particular meet at John’s house to go to school with John’s two boys, His son, John, is in the third grade. [...] The J initial could refer to John Jr. perhaps, certainly not to the other two boys.

The impression now of two men, one tall and bony, with sandy hair and ill-fitting clothes. [...]

[...] A two grain… gram tablet. [...]

[...] There was an initial encounter with a man in the company, in the immediate past—two weeks ago. [...]

[...] Jane said this was a reference to the position of the cap-ring against my note, while the two items were sealed between the two Bristol stiffeners and in the double envelopes. [...] Remember the note was actually folded over the cap, like a sandwich; evidently the pressure of the two Bristol stiffeners and the two envelopes held the cap in the same position relative to the note.

(As usual I placed the objects between two pieces of heavy Bristol, to preclude any identification by touch, then sealed this sandwich in two envelopes. [...]

[...] This is a case where Jane had seen one of the two items making up the envelope objects very recently—the beer can cap, on Friday, October 7, three days ago. [...] See pages 86-88 for tracings of the two envelope objects, and the beer can. [...]

(Two other couples visited us last Friday evening, Bill and Peggy Gallagher, and Marilyn and Don Wilbur. Jane and I furnished wine, so did the Gallaghers, and the Wilburs brought two six-packs of beer—one of Draft Beer, the other of Carling Black Label.

(2nd Question: Who are the two women you mentioned? [...] See the interpretation of the “two women and a man” data at the bottom of page 120. [...] My thought was that the two women and a man Seth referred to were Marjorie Buck, Ruth Gridley, and Roy Fox, all connected directly to The Art Shop, which furnished the bill used as envelope object. [...]

[...] “And perhaps two S’s, and a 1961.” By repeating Seth’s data I hoped he would furnish more information on the M. We can see no definite connections with two S’s or 1961. Two of the capital M’s on the object itself are in the words Must, in a line at the bottom concerning claims, and in Moore Business Forms, Inc.

[...] I believe these two go together, and they also reflect the conditions described relating to the error data just above. [...] The two items were both kept in cardboard boxes, small, and in separate places.

(The connections with washings and the art comes about because on the first two pages of the comic story sent to me by Bill Ward, the heroine is shown taking a shower, using a towel, etc. This is a prominent part of the first two pages, not just a panel on each. [...]

(Seth Two is dealt with at length in Chapter Seventeen of Jane’s book The Seth Material. [...] In the outline Seth gave for this book before dictation began, we were told that Seth Two would be explained. Some of our questions for Chapter Twenty had concerned Seth Two also. [...]

[...] She smiled faintly as she spoke for Seth Two. [...] It was as though Seth Two wasn’t familiar with vocal chords or words, and so took pains to use those mechanisms in just the right way. The contrast between the two Seths couldn’t have been more complete.)

(“There were two brothers strongly united in control of Italy at the time. Perhaps I should say two males, one in the higher capacity and the other his chancellor, with whom I was involved as Pope; and I sent armies to the north also.

[...] I now watched a transformation begin to take place in Jane, as our familiar Seth retreated and Seth Two began to come to the fore. [...] Jane has often told me that whereas she feels Seth come to her in a very warm and alive and friendly manner, she feels her consciousness going out of herself to meet Seth Two — “up the invisible pyramid like a draft up a flue.” [...]

[...] Step two, getting rid of the intruder, could at least follow. The trouble is that working within that framework, the self-structure is further weakened, for the normally repressed characteristics of Augustus Two are forever denied. [...]

[...] Unfortunately in his present state, powerless as it were without Augustus Two, he might also simply call on his “alter ego” to show the good doctor that he was no one to trifle with.

When Augustus Two was in control of the body the chemical makeup varied considerably. [...]

If chemical alteration were made in Augustus Two he would return to the Augustus One personality, but the change would be artificial — not permanent, and possibly quite dangerous.

[...] Jane said she felt Seth Two behind her, for the first time in a long while. [...] “Well, I’ll get it,” she said, “or try to,” meaning she’d try to bring in Seth Two.

[...] When she finally began speaking her voice was higher than usual—quite a bit higher—but not as high as I remembered earlier Seth Two voices. [...] Seth Two:)

(11:21.) You do not understand how alike you two are. [...]

You set upon this adventure, the two of you. [...]

(“Two men and two women.” [...] Two men and two women were involved in the meeting referred to earlier: Jane’s father Del and myself, and Jane and Del’s wife. [...]

Two men and two women.

[...] One or two small white objects, perhaps dice. [...]

[...] Interpretations became elusive indeed, and part of our knowledge that two visits to Saratoga were involved was subjective only. [...]

[...] (Jane smiled.) In connection with the episodes, four, four in the afternoon or four people, two male and two female. [...]

As in trying to go two ways at once. A pulling in two directions, with a balance of tension resulting. [...]

[...] Thus Aunt Mabel was involved with funerals and related activities on two out of the three occasions that Jane has spoken with her; these two occasions being the times when Jane could exchange more than greetings with her, also. [...]

[...] “Two males and two females, I believe.” [...] Jane speculated that two of the first names mentioned in the article on the front of the object, could be taken as male names by some: Frances, and Orlyn.

(I have indicated the highlights of both sides of the object by typewriter; actually it was printed in two columns, instead of the one I have indicated. [...] I placed it between the usual two pieces of Bristol, then sealed it in the regular double envelopes.

Two male and two females, I believe.

(“Can you say anything about the two females?”)

The spirits of the two islands join for a journey to a third one, and there they discover a top-heavy land filled to the brim with strange birds and insects and animals that neither knew at home. [...]

[...] My life is far the better, and you two are only poor shadowy counterparts of me.”

[...] The many species that roam my domain demand my attention, and if you two want to exchange your realities that is fine — but leave me out of it, please.”

[...] For the spirit is convinced that it definitely improved the condition of Island Two, and there is no doubt that the spirit of the second island improved Island One beyond degree.
