We are in the preliminary stages with the Sumari language—hopefully leading to some understanding of the nature of sound, though (humorously) you may not yet be able to build a pyramid in your backyard.

(Jane had given a very long session in ESP class last night, along with Sumari. [...]

[...] He called Jane last Friday from his home in Bridgehampton, New York; he wanted some insights into his writing of Seagull; Richard attended ESP class last night, and heard Seth, Sumari, etc. [...]

[...] I released the creativity full force then in the beginning of Adventures and the new (Sumari) development.

[...] She also sang in Sumari, her trance language, after finishing with the session. [...]

[...] Yet she has to get into a “certain mental climate” in order to reach Seth Two, Jane said, and all of her other trance phenomena — Sumari, and so forth — are also related to that state.¹

[...] I’m not referring here only to “outside” developments like Jane’s powerful Seth voice, her speaking and singing in Sumari, or her slow and fast sounds as produced for this session, but to inner, audible and inaudible manifestations or translations of sound.

At the same time, he was to be denied his rightful place as a writer (as I’d said earlier), to defend this new position—a position moreover that seemed to change all the time—for beside my books there was Seven, Sumari, and later Cézanne and James. [...]

[...] We disliked interrupting our creative rhythms in that fashion, although in the meantime Jane kept ESP class going as usual, coming through as Seth and as Sumari within that context. [...]

[...] One very unusual way these showed themselves began on the evening of October 31, when four younger people who had been members of ESP class visited us from New York City.⁸ They’d been scouting the Elmira area for other ex-students, to see if any of them had old class tapes of Jane speaking for Seth and/or singing in Sumari; they had had some success in their searches, but we didn’t play any of the tapes that night.⁹
