(I told Jane about the very excellent dream I’d had about her last night—in which I’d seen her fully recovered—walking, her hair black again, shopping, going out, meeting friends who exclaimed over her great progress. [...]

[...] I read the prayer with her, and left to go food shopping at 7:05 PM. [...]

(After she’d eaten a good supper, and I’d checked the TV schedule for the evening and read the prayer, I left at 7:15 to go food shopping at the Acme on the south side.)

(I suggested to Jane that she end the session anyhow, since it was getting to be about as long as I could get typed this evening, and I also had to go food shopping.)

The shop was directly across the way from Throckmorton’s, and in like manner the family lived upstairs and in the rear. A cobblestone street lay between the two shops. [...]

The bakery across the street from Throckmorton’s shop was run by a man called Ragan. [...]

This sort of thing happens frequently with Miss Dineen, and consciously she is drawn toward areas of town, for example, in which certain individuals are shopping or strolling, so that while she visits few fashionable establishments, she enjoys a series of seemingly unrelated, pleasant encounters with strangers.

She was drawn to shop when she did for that reason, and also because of the personal connection—how strange that she should have anything in common with these visitors from Canada. [...]

[...] This morning I took the lawn mower out to the shop a couple of miles outside town on Wellsburg Road. [...]

One portion of the personality will carry on conscious behavior — go to work, shop, or whatever, while the other portion of the personality will not remember performing those acts at all.
