[...] She has also been working with and choosing the published and unpublished Seth sessions for The Magical Approach. [...] Laurel has been involved with Jane’s, Seth’s, and my work since November of 1979, when she was 24 years old. Her boyfriend recommended Seth Speaks to her. [...] Laurel began writing to Jane and me in 1980 — while Seth was dictating The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events and Jane was writing her God of Jane. [...]
[...] Today I sent Sue a copy of a recent page of Seth’s material on the intellect, and a list of the questions about George that Seth discussed above. I expect her answers to tally with Seth’s.
As Seth suggests, through even a five-minute exercise, in which we sit quietly and look about, we can become aware that the present is the point of power. [...] Action is thought in physical motion, Seth tells us. [...]
[...] Conversations With Seth is Sue’s fine two-volume account of the ESP classes Jane held from September 1967 to February 1975. Tam’s enthusiastic and intuitive help was always invaluable to Jane, ever since he encouraged her to publish her first book, The Seth Material, in 1970.
(Jane first mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Seth, her trance personality, would start another book of his own soon. [...] We hadn’t taken it very seriously, since we’d finished proofreading Seth’s first book, Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul,1 only last month; certainly we weren’t prepared for the fact that he was quite capable of launching another such project so quickly. Nor did Jane have any conscious thoughts about subject matter, or a title, for any projected Seth book.
[...] Given her permission, Seth can come through very powerfully indeed. [...] By this I mean that when she speaks for Seth her voice drops in register, becomes somewhat stronger, and acquires Seth’s own deliberate but unique accent and rhythm. [...]
(A few notes, added later: Six months were to pass before we learned the rest of the title for Seth’s book. While Jane was resting before supper on October 25, 1972, the full name popped into her conscious mind: The Nature of Personal Reality: A Seth Book. [...]
1. The Seth Material was published by Prentice-Hall, Inc. [...] Seth Speaks was published by Prentice-Hall in 1972 and by Amber–Allen Publishing/New World Library in 1994.
[...] In the 277th session Seth said this book would be published. [...] Jane did not seriously expect Fell to accept this book, but still wants to hear from Seth about it. [...] See the notes on page 312, Volume 5. Seth hasn’t named any specific publishers in his predictions, nor have we asked.
(In the 210th session for November 22,1965, Seth stated that he had picked up an “incipient malignancy” in Helen Dyer, who is a friend of our landlady, Marian Spaziani. [...] We have heard nothing more on this, either from Seth or the two women. [...] Since Seth mentioned the abdominal region in connection with Helen, we wonder about possible distortion on Jane’s part here. [...]
(In the 229th session Seth went into some detail concerning the tax problems of our landlord, Jimmy Spaziani. [...] Seth mentioned legal difficulties for Jimmy in connection with a March 15 date. Seth also saw a possible future illness for Jimmy.
[...] As Seth said, she did not appear; her planned activities at the newspaper where she works were changed unexpectedly; she was taken out of town Wednesday night, the time of the 242nd session. [...] Seth, or Jane, was incorrect on the day however. [...]
(Seth Two is dealt with at length in Chapter Seventeen of Jane’s book The Seth Material. [...] In the outline Seth gave for this book before dictation began, we were told that Seth Two would be explained. Some of our questions for Chapter Twenty had concerned Seth Two also. [...]
[...] I now watched a transformation begin to take place in Jane, as our familiar Seth retreated and Seth Two began to come to the fore. [...] Jane has often told me that whereas she feels Seth come to her in a very warm and alive and friendly manner, she feels her consciousness going out of herself to meet Seth Two — “up the invisible pyramid like a draft up a flue.” [...]
(At this writing we do not know which pope Seth referred to. When I came to type up this session I wondered if Seth-Jane’s mention of the third century might be an error. [If so, I hadn’t been quick enough to catch it; I could have asked about it at once.] Since Seth gave A.D. 300 in the class session for last May, I personally think it more likely that his papal incarnation followed this date, taking place in the fourth century. [...]
[...] She smiled faintly as she spoke for Seth Two. [...] It was as though Seth Two wasn’t familiar with vocal chords or words, and so took pains to use those mechanisms in just the right way. The contrast between the two Seths couldn’t have been more complete.)
(Seth also said that Jane and I would die within a short time of each other, when our earthly work was finished. [...] Seth said that Jane would publish 5 books on the Seth Material; 3 novels; 3 books of poetry; plus 2 books to be dictated by Seth himself. [...]
(As predicted by Seth in the 420th session for July 1, 1968, Prentice-Hall is to publish the first book on the Seth material. [...]
(Here Seth refers to the copies of sessions concerning John and his company, Searle, that John has carefully kept. John is also to make a tape for us, correlating all the data, predictions, etc., that Seth has given him to date.
[...] After joking with Peggy about interviews, cameras, etc., Seth said in time that he would interview Peg, who by then would be “notorious,” or better known. [...] Seth also told Peg there was some data she would need, that she would request it herself, about the crisis in her own life approximately 6 years from now.
Seth explains exactly how we translate thoughts into physical reality. To our knowledge, this explanation is original with the Seth Material To say the least, the supposition that we actually create matter gives rise to all kinds of questions, and Rob and I have considered many of them at one time or another. Was Seth saying that we created tables and chairs as well as events? [...]
Seth explained that the apparition’s appearance was distorted by Bill’s own ideas, though. [...] Bill interpreted the available data in his own way: this was the Seth that Bill saw, regardless of Seth’s own appearance.
I’m dealing with this subject, the nature of physical matter, first, because it is basic to any understanding of Seth’s theories. Seth says that we form the physical universe as unselfconsciously as we breathe. [...]
Seth answers these questions and many we hadn’t even considered. [...] Seth was describing the intimate connection between expectation and perception—what we see and observe—to Bill Macdonnel, when the incident took place. [...]
1. Seth is telling us a great deal here, on a subject Jane and I have done little to explore with him. [...] I’m interpreting Seth to say that a consciousness can choose to range among such forms. However, for reasons to be hinted at later in the session, the primate man (who is also a mammal) falls outside of Seth’s meaning here.
In the 4th session for December 8, 1963, the personality Jane and I had been contacting through the Ouija board, Frank Withers, spelled out with the board’s pointer the message that he preferred to be called Seth—and Seth it’s been ever since. Shortly before he announced himself as Seth, I’d asked Frank Withers if people were ever “reborn as animals.” [...]
Then as we sat for the session Jane told me that after supper tonight she’d picked up material from Seth “that I wasn’t sure of because I didn’t understand what he meant….” [...] I thought it obvious that her two latest intuitions from Seth were directly related—and that certain creative portions of her psyche never stopped “working.” [...]
2. Seth has told us almost from the beginning of the sessions that in our terms the earth we know is but the latest in a series of earths that have existed in the same “space,” or “value climate of psychological reality.” According to Seth, however, much more is involved. [...]
Jane and I placed no particular emphasis upon this information when Seth came through with it, but in retrospect we realized that it contains two significant points: Seth’s reference to “another book,” which we think is “Unknown” Reality, and his use of the word “counterparts.” In its ordinary dictionary sense, the term has appeared a few times in the sessions, but Seth’s use of it in the passage quoted above has a special implication, I think; one that Jane and I missed at the time of its reception. For in Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality, Seth’s concept of counterparts certainly takes on its own unique meaning within his study of personhood. (Although not bringing up his ideas of reincarnation or points of power in the 683rd session, Seth implied both of those qualities in many parts of that material.)
[...] I added that I didn’t care how “tough” or difficult a book it might be — if such was needed to get Seth’s ideas across, then okay. [...] It was obvious that she was pleased with this new project, that the successes of Seth Speaks and Personal Reality had given her a strong confidence in Seth’s and her own abilities; yet she was starting right in with questions:
(2. “Are these units of consciousness that Seth started talking about in the last session the same as the EE units he described in Seth Speaks, a development of that original idea, or what?” [See Note 3 for Session 682.]
(3. “It would be nice if Seth would say something about the dream I had the night before last, in which I think I contacted my [deceased] mother for the second time.” [...] Seth broached the idea of Through My Eyes in Chapter 6 of Personal Reality. [...]
[...] I’ll explain what I mean by referring to my two questions for Seth in reverse order. [...] With Seth’s evident help, Jane herself began at least a partial answer — one that was cut off by our visitor, Barbara, pounding upon our door. [...] Not only that: I must note that even several years later we’ve still acquired no Seth material at all on such possible counterpart and family-of-consciousness roles. I also let go (although not consciously and deliberately) my plans to keep after Seth for that kind of information.
(“I’m at the point now where I know what Seth’s going to talk about,” “Jane said a few minutes before the session began. [...] Seth’s there, but he doesn’t quite make it through….”
(1. Granting Seth’s concept of time: Does the reincarnating personality usually choose to experience its simultaneous lives through various families of consciousness, or is it more likely to remain “loyal” to one such family in all of them? At the start of tonight’s session Seth had remarked that generally speaking counterparts are part of the same psychic family, but I wanted to know if reincarnating personalities are also.
In a way, however, Seth may do Jane and me something of an injustice when he remarks, for instance, that the Sumari “don’t hang around to cut the grass….” [...] I doubt that the Seth material would exist in its present recorded form if we weren’t that way.
[...] (Long pause.) My communications are dependent upon Seth’s permission as well as Ruburt’s. The material should still be called the Seth material, for I am an aspect of Seth that you did not know, and in the past I helped him deliver material though I did not directly attend sessions. [...]
[...] None did, but she received brief notes from Seth: “You don’t have to worry about me drinking too much. [...] I drank too much and I can’t let Seth speak in his own voice, to answer my questions.” [...]
[...] Just above us is Seth; above both is the new development that we have come to call Seth’s entity; this is the peak of the cone. [...]
(We wondered why Seth’s entity chose to give this data, since it seemed Seth could have done so. [...]
(This will be the first time Seth has appeared on television since we did some promotional work for The Seth Material after its publication in 1970. At that time Jane spoke for Seth on two occasions from cities in the East. [...] I might add that since Seth launched “Unknown” Reality in February of this year, Jane and I have fulfilled another television commitment, and that she was the subject of a lengthy radio interview. [...]
6. Seth, in the 681st session: “Atoms can move in more directions than one at once.” In Note 7 for that session I wrote that as an artist my intuitional reaction to that statement was to associate the multidirectional ability of the atom with Seth’s notions of simultaneous time and probabilities. [...] Thus, according to Seth, we have a most complicated and profound dance of units or essences — behavior not really amenable to translation in words.
[...] [We hardly ever talk about whatever personal involvement either of us might have had with reincarnation, incidentally, regardless of whether any such lives would be based upon Seth’s ideas of simultaneous time and probabilities, or upon time as a series of successive moments.] Jane did know that the rest of the session would be for her, though. She was right; Seth came through at 10:55, then said good night at 11:30 P.M.
See Chapter 15 of Seth Speaks for Seth’s material on the art and technology of the ancient civilization of Lumina (as well as his references to those that came before and after it). [...]
(At the end of the 852nd session I mentioned a letter Jane had received last month from a professor of physics, and that in a recent nonbook session Seth had come through with a partial answer to some of the professor’s questions. This afternoon Jane reread the letter, and wondered if Seth might give more material in reply; as she worked on Heroics she did get a line or two from Seth, commenting on that possibility. My main reason for presenting the excerpts that follow is the same as it’s been on other occasions: Seth’s material fits into Mass Events very well. [...] In general, then, tonight Seth discusses questions many correspondents have asked; but specifically, his material is a continuation of an answer to some of the professor’s questions. I know that eventually I’ll mail to that gentleman whatever insights Seth gives us.
(Last Thursday, Jane and I received from Prentice-Hall our first copies of the German translation of Seth Speaks. [...] This occasion signals the first appearance of the Seth material in another language, and we’re happy to note that the translator, with whom Jane exchanged just a couple of letters, did an excellent, painstaking job. [...]
(In addition, we expect that later this year the Dutch translation of Seth Speaks will be published — but again, we don’t know just when this will happen. We hope these two editions will lead to the publication of Seth’s material in other languages.
(In closing out the last session, Seth told us that he’d “cover everything that needs to be covered” in his books, and I wrote that sometimes I’d still choose to insert other particularly apropos material of his into whatever book he might be producing at the time. [...] So inserting this material puts off by one — at least — Seth’s first session for Chapter 8 of Mass Events.
(Again, see the 199th session, in which Seth’s information on drug companies in Minneapolis is confirmed by John. John now laughed at Seth/Jane’s amusing reference to an affair.
[...] At next break, John confirmed Seth’s statement that his superior was worried about his job. John also agreed with Seth that only two other salesman are selling well in the division. [...]
[...] Jane said Seth was extremely well tuned in on John tonight; she hoped that he would be able to return this evening while things were going so well. Jane also said she felt that Seth had more information on John’s mother, but that she had blocked it.
(As far as we know, this is the first overt experience we have encountered where Seth has spoken to another party while separated, in our time and distance, from Jane. [...] We are well aware that it could be said Seth was merely taking credit for another person’s psychic experience.
In June of 1969 we were really startled when Seth told us that Rob might be visited by one of his “probable selves.” At the time of the session, we didn’t know what probable selves were, though Seth had used the term once or twice in the past. [...] According to Seth, each of us has counterparts in other systems of reality; not identical selves or twins, but other selves who are part of our entity, developing abilities in a different way than we are here.
[...] Over the next few weeks he did psychological time exercises suggested by Seth, and tried to be intuitively alert to anything out of the ordinary. In the meantime we had another session, and Rob had quite a few questions ready to ask Seth. According to what Seth told us, this probable self is a Dr. Pietra. [...]
Seth told us quite a bit about this “man” that night, and described some of the methods he was using in an attempt to contact this reality. Seth said: “There are, in fact, infinite varieties of matter, existing in what you would call one space framework. [...]
“He is studying the use of painting in therapy,” Seth said. [...] Seth went on to say that “certain paintings can capture and direct the healing abilities of the viewer. [...]
(Seth reiterated that Jane’s book on the Seth material would be published, and that the poetry book would be published. [...] Jane’s publisher F. Fell, has written asking for photographs pertaining to the Seth book; in connection with this and in answer to my question, Seth said he would be amused to see a reproduction of my painting, purporting to be Seth, in the book. I’d done my oil of Seth in May/June of 1965.
(The evening’s conversation had largely concerned matters other than Seth, but his name had been mentioned. After the Gallaghers left Jane said she could feel Seth “buzzing around.” Shortly after this she began speaking as Seth, in an average voice; she was smoking; she gestured often, and eventually her eyes began to open. [...] I did not ask Seth the type of question I would prefer being answered in writing.
(Seth began by discussing a very emotional dream I had on the night of Thursday, February 24, involving what seemed to be the death of my father. [...] Seth explained how the dream was built around my subconscious fears concerning my father. [...] The conclusions were somewhat similar, and contained Seth’s assertions that the death of my father is not imminent, although he is 75. Seth went into one of the basic problems behind the dream, the lack of an easy communication between my father and myself. [...]
[...] “Seth,” she said, “is being tricky tonight.” Because of her excitement in the day’s events, she felt Seth was using a more deliberate manner than usual in order to “lull” her psychologically. Jane said she was fully aware of Seth’s tactics. She announced also that she was cooperating in case Seth wanted to say anything about the notes on her ESP manuscript.
(Toward the end of the session as Seth, Jane and I sat talking alone, after the departure of the Gallaghers, Seth volunteered the information that Scotty was a greedy child. He belonged to an entity that was strongly attached to physical life on our plane, Seth said; the entity having experienced many physical lives, and still refusing to leave earth as we know it.
(When I spend too much time going out, Seth told me, too many evenings in a row visiting or dancing, I get depressed because I feel it is a waste of time in spite of the psychic benefits to be derived from being with others. This feeling stems from my mother, who “must always be up and at it,” Seth said, and also from my Aunt Alice, who used to be a missionary, and whom I have met but once or twice. [...]
[...] I am now aware of this however, and Seth told me I saved the situation last Saturday evening at Mihalyk’s by asking Jane to dance.)
2. Seth notes in part, in Chapter Three of Seth Speaks: “Root assumptions are those built-in ideas of reality … those agreements upon which you base your ideas of existence. [...]
[...] According to Seth, Emerson is one of the “Speakers” — personalities who, both in the physical state and out of it, speak to man through the ages, reminding him of inner knowledge so that it is never really forgotten. [...] Also see Chapter Twenty in Seth Speaks.
[...] Rooney, incidentally, can be seen in a photograph with Jane on the jacket of The Seth Material, hard cover edition.
[...] Actually, once Jane began speaking for Seth the session went very well indeed, and lasted until midnight. [...]
[...] Already those at Ankh-Hermes have been asked to withdraw from sale their shortened version of Seth Spreekt, and to publish a full-length one instead—a very expensive proposition indeed. [...] We’re caught between the economic realities of the situation as far as Ankh-Hermes is concerned, and our own intense desires that translations of the Seth books match the original versions as closely as possible. We fully agree with Seth that changes and distortions are inevitable as the Seth material is moved from English into other languages; we just want those alterations kept to a minimum. [...] And all concerned must wait at least another year before a full-length version of Seth Speaks will be published in the Dutch language.
[...] Considering the eagerness with which we’ve looked forward to having the Seth material published in other languages, and the long waiting periods involved, this situation is frustrating indeed. Many of my notes, some of which contain excerpts of Seth material, have been eliminated. [...] The Appendix in Seth Spreekt is only 11 pages long, chopped down from 67 pages.
[...] [Some of them are on reincarnation, and I plan to present them when Seth gets into that subject in Dreams.] On October 7, a Sunday, Jane saw for the first time the work Sue Watkins has done on Conversations With Seth, the book she’s writing about the ESP classes Jane used to hold. [...]
During this session hiatus I’ve been spending much time upon a series of letters to the publishers of Seth Speaks in Switzerland and in the Netherlands, as well as to those in charge at Prentice-Hall.1 Last Saturday night we had a very interesting meeting with a psychologist from New York City. Our visitor taped Seth’s copious material, and is to send us a transcript of it.
“Seth straddles many of these points and appears in the dream levels of others at their personal symbol level. [...] This intersection of Seth-Jane in trance also happens in dreams, when book sessions occur there. Sometimes there is some separation, though, as when I’m aware of Seth giving me material … Seth is an ancient entity, however. [...]
3. In Note 2 for Session 688, I quoted Seth briefly on the meaning he attached to the word “camouflage” (in 1970). Jane’s use of it here in her own material was rather unusual, however, and took us way back to the first time we heard it from Seth, in the 16th session for January 15, 1964.
[...] I’ve barely mentioned them in recent notes — just for sessions 696 and 698 — but Seth has had a good deal to say about them in current personal material.] Many of the dreams have been quite long and involved. [...]
