[...] It was too much: Peg and Bill dropping in like that during a break in the first Seth session we’d held in almost a year. [...] We waited to see if Seth would return—and he did, in less than a minute. [...]
(This is the first Seth session Jane has held since the private session for November 10, 1982: Eleven months. [...]
[...] She’s mentioned trying to have a session for the last two days, after I’ve been mentioning it briefly to her recently, as per our agreement to see if she could have Seth sessions while in the hospital. [...]
[...] Her Seth voice was deeper than her usual voice to some extent, but it wasn’t loud, and I was sure no one would notice anything unusual sound-wise from the hall outside the closed door of room 330. [...]
(On Friday, October 28, I [Jane] saw Peg for the first time since her return, and went over the Seth notes. [...] I typed up Seth’s impressions and gave them to the Gallaghers and together they wrote in their comments. [...]
[...] Seth’s impressions were given in sessions 294, 295, 296, and 297 on October 17, October 19, October 24, October 26.
(A note by RFB: Jane’s punctuation in her copies of Seth’s Gallagher materials varies at times from the originals—but only in small ways, and not at all in content.)
[...] She said she knew what blocking Seth was referring to; she felt herself “come up” just before break. The material Seth wanted to discuss was about Jane and Ruburt and Jane’s writing. Jane believed it was an extension of the arrangement Seth mentioned briefly on page 124, when he talked about Jane accepting inspiration and ideas from Ruburt without realizing it.
(Tam Mossman, editor at Prentice-Hall; they are considering publishing the Seth material. [...] Therein Seth stated that Jane would receive “rather unexpected word concerning a book.”
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
Jane does not call herself Jane as a writer; Ruburt on other occasions; Seth on other occasions, and so forth. [...]
(Since Jane began delivering the Seth material, I’ve become more and more interested in questions about the origins of creative [meaning artistic] endeavors. [...] But, paradoxically, the origins aren’t to be found there, either, or grasped in regular terms, for according to Seth they’d lie outside the reach of physical life. Without going into Seth’s ideas that time is simultaneous, or that any endeavor is creative, the kinds of origins I’m discussing here wouldn’t have any beginning or end. [...]
[...] In this appendix I’ve put together some material on mysticism from Jane, Seth, and myself. [...] As events worked out, Seth was halfway through Volume 1 of “Unknown” Reality before I realized that these supplementary notes would work well as the first appendix in the first volume. [...]
(“In fact,” she continued, “I’m embarrassed that Seth called me a mystic — a great one, I mean — like that. No matter whether it’s natural or not …” Rather reluctantly, she agreed to let me present that personal material here; but only, I think, because she understood my desire to give what I consider to be pertinent background material for the Seth books. [...]
(When Seth gave us this information, the sessions had barely started. Yet we could relate to it at once; in this instance especially Seth’s insights “fit” Jane’s conscious knowledge and extended it in most interesting ways.
(Jane has finished her ESP book for all practical purposes, and has been looking through the Seth material for a suitable quote to end the final chapter. I suggested she ask Seth for a few appropriate words this evening.
(Jane said that when Seth began speaking she tried to keep herself out of it as much as possible. She had the feeling that Seth was in the foreground, she was in the background. [...]
(Jane said she felt that Seth was trying to come through with material on the Gallagher object, and that she was trying not to block it. She had the feeling Seth wanted to say it was rock; the other day Jane had the conscious impression that it was tin or galvanized metal, of the sort Bill Gallagher uses in fashioning some of his modern sculpture.
(Jane has been improving in her psychological time experiments since Seth advised her that she was trying too hard in the 178th session. [...]
[...] This is quite possible, we think, although we did not check with Seth. [...] Seth had mentioned 3 PM during the 242nd session, and Peggy said it was possible. [...] We do not know since we did not check with Seth. [...]
(Jane and I made what connections we could, and did not ask Seth for any clarifications. [...] As stated it is a reproduction of a page of notes I had made, concerning the efforts of Jane and myself to pin down Seth’s impressions given on page 32 of the last session.
(The connection with the envelope object is that the object concerns an investigation of Seth’s data on page 32; this data involves Peggy’s involvement in a crisis at her place of employment. [...] Peggy was given this change of plans on Tuesday, March 15, and as shown Seth mentions March 15 in the data this evening.
[...] The notes concern the efforts of Jane and myself to pin down Seth’s impressions given on page 32 of the last session.
(“The issue is, basically, that Jane feels and fears that Seth—the Seth phenomena—could overwhelm her and take over eintirely if she ever permitted it to—subjugating all else that she holds dear; her own talent, her own personality even, so that she would become merely a spokesperson for Seth.”
[...] Seth has mentioned her fears at times recently; so have we; still, I asked that if she had a session tonight Seth might give some information on the fears. [...]
[...] I think it came to me because of my concern recently over the new idea I’d come across—concerning Jane’s ideas about her relationship with Seth, her feelings about her abilities versus his, etc. I must admit that I am still rather surprised to understand, finally, that Jane has entertained feelings of inferiority about her abilities as related to those of Seth.
(“Naturally, she wouldn’t ever let Seth say this, especially without coaxing. All else would come after this primary, basic fear—her dislike of going public, especially when she found out that Seth could easily win a large audience in the country, and perhaps the world. [...]
(Seth did make a prediction: Jane will write an excellent book about the class sessions, and this will lead many to read the regular Seth material. Seth added that the material itself, in session format, will be published in its entirety one day. [...]
[...] After an average-length break an unrecorded interval of material followed, with Seth mainly answering questions for Carl. [...] [This is usually the case when I don’t take notes.] One such point had to do with Seth’s statement that whenever a person thinks strongly about another person, a portion of the “thinker” goes out to the “thought-subject,” etc.
[...] He teaches a high school course called “Inner and Outer Space,” in a small city in Connecticut; the class uses Jane’s book, The Seth Material, as text. [...]
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
Seth’s almost casual remark here: “So does it appear to my consciousness,” embodies a new thought for us in connection with Jane’s adventures with massiveness; it’s the kind of clue about the Seth phenomenon that we’re always interested in getting. I also think the statement represents one way in which Jane, while speaking for Seth, interprets his reality for us in terms we can understand.
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
[...] In volume, her voice had ranged up and down the scale — a most unusual demonstration as far as these sessions for “Unknown” Reality are concerned; usually she has Seth come through in a rather businesslike, routine manner, with any milder voice or speed effects taking place within that framework.
[...] “Now I don’t know what to do — I could go to bed or continue the session for hours. …” She’d spent most of her day writing lyrics for rock music — for reasons not necessary to go into here — and now that activity reminded her of a poem she’d written in May 1963, well over six months before she began speaking for Seth. [...]
(It should be noted here that Jane spent most of the day working on the article for Fate Magazine, dealing with Seth and the envelope experiments. In the 233rd session, Seth said the article would be sold. [...] It was tiring work in its own way, and Seth gives this activity as one of the reasons the envelope experiment results were not better. [...]
(Seth is correct, and after he mentioned the twine connection Jane and I remembered it. This took place not on January 25, however, but on February 10, when the manuscript on the Seth material and the poetry book were mailed together. But Jane wrote letter #4, concerning the Seth material, on January 25. [...]
[...] It will be remembered that Seth dealt with her husband’s financial activities in some detail in the 229th session. Seth has also called Marian an excellent telepathic receiver, and has dealt with some of her experiences, concerning the death of her husband’s father, in past sessions. [...]
(This reminds me that on page 58 of the 206th session, Seth briefly described what he usually “sees” of us, or any witnesses, during a session. Unless he narrows his focus and concentration to concentrate upon the present individual during a session, Seth told us he sees a composite image, an energy reality that is composed of past personalities, and in many cases also of future personalities that will be adopted by the inner self.)
[...] This framework matches that in the already-published Seth books like Seth Speaks and The Nature of Personal Reality.
The Early Sessions are also very important for the sheer preservation and distribution of the Seth material. [...] The Seth material is a long way from being on computer—if that ever happens—and relatively few readers will make the journey to Yale University Library, to study the collection of Jane’s and my papers that’s available there for anyone to see.
[...] These books consist of the first 510 “sessions” that my wife, Jane Roberts, delivered for that well-known “energy personality essence”, Seth, after she began speaking in a trance or dissociated state in December 1963. [...]
[...] Also, even though I’d been so intimately involved with the Seth material from the very beginning, for example, I didn’t fully comprehend the volume of just the session material that we’d accumulated over a total of 21 years. [...]
[...] Note that the date of Seth’s birth, given as 1486, is probably wrong. [...] From material given in various sessions we think the date of Seth’s death, given as 1655, is more likely to be correct. If Seth had been born in 1586 he would have been 69 at his death in 1655. [...]
[...] I have notes on the proceedings, and will include them in the record should Seth ever discuss them at some point in the future. Seth was not involved in Tuesday evening’s activities in any way.
(In the 4th session, December 8,1963, Seth stated he lived in Denmark three centuries ago, and that Jane and I did also. According to Seth Triev no longer exists. [...]
(During break we quickly looked through the early sessions to see if we could establish the year of Seth’s birth. [...] Seth has said at various times during the year that we can bring such information up to date, but it seems that we do not get around to it. [...]
3. A note added later: Of course, as soon as Seth mentioned units of consciousness in “Unknown” Reality I thought of the electromagnetic energy units (EE units, as he called them) that he’d discussed in 1969 and 1971. See sessions 504 through 506 in the Appendix of The Seth Material, and the 581st session in Chapter 20 of Seth Speaks, respectively. [...]
(“I think Seth’s heading toward something new,” Jane said at 9:20, as we sat waiting for the session. [...]
[...] “I feel him — Seth — around now,” she said, “but it’s like last time: I’m getting stuff, but I’m waiting until it’s clear … I don’t really feel looped, but the center of focus I always use in the sessions seems strange. [...]
(“Good evening, Seth.”
[...] On page 24 Seth stated that when Jane receives images, the psychological framework between Seth and Jane is operating; in these instances Seth is not giving Jane envelope data by way of concepts, directly and telepathically. [...]
[...] We made what connections we could, but missed some that Seth later pointed out; these then seemed to be rather obvious. It also developed that we had some conflict of terminology, as will be seen, and as Seth hints at in the last data above.
[...] Jane’s publisher has written requesting some photos, drawings, etc., in connection with the book Jane is now writing on the Seth material. [...]
[...] The predictions were made at 3 PM, March 15; Seth has something to say about the hour and day later in the session.
[...] She wondered when, if ever, Seth would allow her to resume. [...] Jane then received the information, she believes from Seth, to the effect that she might soon be allowed to resume psy-time, but only for fifteen-minute periods, and during the evening when I would be home with her.
[...] One of the experiments she listed in the book for the reader to try led, of course, to the development of the Seth material in her own case. [...]
(In the 92nd session, of September 28, 1964, Seth predicted the sale of this specific book by name. [...]
(Seth has predicted sale of the ESP book, and of the material itself many times. [...]
(Seth did give much unexpected material about the brain — and about his own reality, incidentally — but the session turned out to be so long and closely interrelated that I found it very difficult to excerpt; most of the portions I picked out were left hanging, or were too incomplete. Naturally, Seth said what he said from his own viewpoint. I ended up choosing the few quotations gathered together here just to indicate the direction of the information, while hoping that the entire session, with others promised on the subject by Seth, will be published some day.
(Even if beta waves, then, seem to be the “official pulses” of our civilization [to use Seth’s phrase from a session that will be quoted in part below], still Jane and I wonder: When aren’t we actually in a state of altered consciousness? [...] But more than this, why not call all actions of the brain “altered” when compared to Seth’s concept of the individual personality’s whole self or entity?1
[...] Nor at this time, given the minimum premise that Jane’s speaking for Seth constitutes any indication of “paranormal” activity, do we think that her performance could be identified as such per se on the graphs of her brain waves. [...] Presumably, however, when speaking for Seth, Jane would show definite changes in all frequency areas in both hemispheres, with the theta and delta ranges altered the most. [...]
1. See Seth’s definition of the entity as given in Chapter 5 of The Seth Material.
Last month, in the opening notes for Session 931, in Chapter 9, I recorded that on July 8 Jane spontaneously wrote “a complete outline for a book on Seth’s magical approach to reality.” Actually, we’ve been quite aware of the potential of such an idea ever since Seth began that material a year ago.3 After supper this evening we went over the loose-leaf notebook of information Jane has accumulated for The Magical Approach to Reality: A Seth Book, and discussed how she could follow her outline in putting all of that material—on our dreams, psychic events and insights, her poetry and our essays—together with Seth’s private sessions on the magical approach. [...] Such a book would involve the publication of much Seth material that could either lie in our files for a long time, or never be published. [...]
1. Recently I asked Jane if Seth could give us some information on the consciousness connected with nuclear energy—a fascinating question I’ve often speculated about—and she promised me that he’d discuss it soon. [...] I reminded Jane that some time ago Seth had remarked that as physical creatures we human beings cannot bear to directly confront the basic, vast, unimaginably awesome and creative consciousness of All That Is. [...]
[...] In essence my memory had been fairly accurate—yet rereading Seth’s material was like a revelation to me. [...] Through Seth she expressed the heart of her mystical knowledge:
[...] I explained that I think Seth’s and our own endeavors on her behalf had been negated each time because we’d alerted her sinful self’s fears—making it try harder to protect her according to its own very restrictive orientation.
[...] I knew nothing of its history consciously, and hoped Jane and Seth could help out. As it developed Jane was somewhat hard- pressed to identify the ribbon, did so eventually, and with Seth’s verification. [...]
(Seth confirms after break that the object was linked to the sweater package. We made our connections during break, of course, and felt them strengthened by Seth’s information. [...]
[...] Jane’s personal idea was that Seth used parallelogram to lead up to the rest of the data here. In this respect see page 274, where Seth mentions Jane’s associations.
[...] Again, see Seth’s comments on page 274, concerning his use of Jane’s associations. [...] Seth and Jane here seem to permit the use of such association in a much freer manner than in the past.
