The identity, indeed, is as much and more the inner self as it is the ego. This has been mentioned in the past, but Ruburt became so fearful of his own spontaneity in early life that he was more or less forced, out of fear, to deny the validity of his identity with the inner self. [...]

[...] I have told you that it is extremely limiting to regard the ego as the complete self or personality, or to think that the ego makes up the entire identity.

[...] Brisk walks should be a daily part of Ruburt’s schedule in any case, and walking also refreshes the inner self.

[...] Fear of the spontaneous self is meaningless unless the spontaneous self is set up against the idea of an authority which is not spontaneous. The spontaneous self is feared only because it might break down the authority of a rigid structure. [...]

[...] All shrines are basically shrines to the authority of the self, regardless of the personifications or deifications involved. [...]

The self is not trustworthy. That is another root assumption behind all of your systems, and here Ruburt was experimenting with that self.

(Pause at 10:40.) Put together beliefs in a hostile world and an untrustworthy self, and you end up in difficulty if you are working with other concepts that tell you that spontaneity is good and that the self is to be trusted. [...]

[...] As mentioned (in the 628th session in Chapter Six), there was a time before his condition developed when his “good-self thoughts” and his “bad-self thoughts” vied for his attention, and the body tried desperately to react to constant, alternating and often contradictory concepts.

(10:35.) Augustus Two was filled with a sense of power — because Augustus considered power wrong and set it aside from what he thought of as his normal self. [...]

To some extent this belief of his is quite shared by you, and if his symptoms seem so self-evident to you, imagine how self-evident they seem to him. [...]

Ruburt’s entire self-image is not wrong, therefore.

As Seth continued dictating The Nature of Personal Reality, I wrote a complete poetry manuscript, Dialogues of the Soul and Mortal Self in Time, in which I worked out many of my own beliefs as per suggestions Seth was giving in his book. [...]

Such procedures unfortunately rob a child of important self-knowledge and understanding. [...]

[...] We are actually involved in changing a way of life, in altering our very view of the self and the world in the hopes of acquiring a new sense of harmony with our bodies, our minds, our fellow creatures, and the environment.

In most cases these youngsters are actually quite secretive — though the self they show to parents and friends might appear to be lively and gregarious.

Ruburt’s symptoms were largely protective in nature, providing a defense he felt he needed to protect himself against an unsafe universe from without, and against a suspicious self within.

These were the methods he took then in line with his beliefs about the world and the nature of the self. [...]

Such alternative reactions frighten the ego because they seem to injure the ego’s self-image. [...]

[...] A lack of communication between the ego and the inner self is obviously one of the main causes for such difficulties.

[...] All entities are self-aware portions of the energy of All That Is. They are self-generating, and if you understand this, you will stop thinking in terms of beginnings and endings.

[...] And yet at that point, I felt duty-bound to question my own experiences, Seth and the sessions because I refused to hide in self-delusions.

[...] They do not realize that the whole thing is self-created, nor should they in the main, since the urgency to solve problems would dissolve.

[...] For now, suffice it to say that to kill for self-protection or food on your plane does not involve you in what we may call for the first time, I believe, karmic consequences.

[...] The subconscious will then break the physical data given to it down into its psychic components, translate it into symbols; and the inner self, at the request of the subconscious, will then focus all of the energies at its command to deliver the most acceptable solution, taking the entire needs of the whole self into consideration.

[...] In the intense focus of awareness that occurs within the dream state, the inner self is able to direct all of its energies for the purpose of solving a given problem.

[...] For as we have explained, each symbol has various meanings to all layers of the self.

When the ego is of such a rigid nature that it distorts physical reality out of all context, then however the personality had better rely upon the subconscious even in this respect, for the subconscious will at least perceive those elements of physical reality that immediately threaten the whole self.

You are opening up channels to the inner self and, hence, hopefully beyond. [...]

[...] Be lucky and thankful that the inner self does not have these hang-ups. [...]

(To Mack.) First of all, you are protecting the inner self very well and you have a protective attitude toward it which is good. [...]

(To Florence.) And if you trusted your spontaneous self, then you would allow yourself greater freedom. [...]
