Yet in the midst of these beliefs each individual seeks to find a context in which his or her life has meaning, a purpose which will rouse the self to action, a drama in whose theme private actions will have significance.

Not only was he set against himself, but he saw himself as a part of an uncaring mechanistic universe, devoid of purpose, intent, and certainly a universe that cared not a whit for the individual, but only for the species. [...]

(But can an illness ever serve a good purpose? [...]

In this case, the illness could not be called an impeding action unless it persisted long after its purpose was served. [...]

In this life, or rather before incarnating in it, the personality then chose to purposely minimize the intellectual area; not, now, to punish himself, but to understand in and through an exaggerated form, the experience of those far less mentally gifted than himself.
