[...] You would like to kick the downstairs tenants out, and you would like to kick your poor landlord, because you think that Ruburt would like that apartment, and you cannot afford it; and he would not, you believe, come down on his rent.

He cannot disentangle himself from his beliefs about the species, which is why that area is so sensitive to him. [...]

[...] Any violence or hatred serves a purpose beyond itself, so that man in a way often performs services of which he is not consciously aware.

[...] A man who kills with hatred will have his hatred to contend with, but he is not able to kill anyone who has not decided to die—and to die in a particular manner; that is, someone who wants his death blamed on another, who would not commit suicide, who would not choose a long illness—someone who is ready to die but does not want to deal with the circumstances, and wants indeed to be surprised by death.

(Long pause.) Now: the substance (DMSO), used as you are using it, will not do Ruburt any harm, and can be of great value, as it introduces more equitable bodily motions and sensations that now, with Ruburt’s greater understanding, he can accept, appreciate, and put to fullest benefit. [...]

The short paper he wrote today, and my last session, should help here, for we are speaking of the transformation of the Sinful Self, sympathetically, as it is seen as a psychological structure of growth and change—a stage through which the self traveled—one that is no longer necessary and can now instead turn to a new state of innocence. Our friend, Joel, reacts to our Lady of Florence, therefore, as she appears to him now in this place and in this time, and yet he also reacts as a person that he was, in your terms, and our Lady of Florence reacts as a person she was, in your terms. [...]

You are afraid, and he is, unconsciously, that you will fall off the edges of the known universe, that the conscious mind won’t function out of the body, and that only chaos will meet you, and this is not the case. [...]

I have helped Ruburt to some extent in his own projections, though he does not remember them.

The trouble was that you wanted to hide in concepts, and so he brought you out of them so that you could acknowledge the self that deals in concepts, and then give you some relief and release. He leads you back into concepts again. [...]

He spent his last years proving it, and yet it has no validity. [...]

[...] Now, you are acquainted with those portions of self that you are ready to accept at any given time and he knows when you are ready to accept certain concepts, and when you are ready to accept certain experiences. [...]

Ruburt’s papers to you are important, because they show you the way he thinks, and clear communication. [...]

[...] Our visitor is to send us transcripts of the tapes he made. [...]

[...] Man experiences ambitions, desires, likes and dislikes of a highly emotional nature — and at the same time he has intellectual beliefs about himself, his feelings, and the world. [...]

One person may desire fame, and even possess certain abilities that he or she wants to use, and that will indeed lead to that claim. [...]

10:10 P.M. “He slips it in on me, that’s what he does,” Jane remarked, when I kidded her about saying the session couldn’t be for Dreams. [...]

[...] We hadn’t taken it very seriously, since we’d finished proofreading Seth’s first book, Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul,¹ only last month; certainly we weren’t prepared for the fact that he was quite capable of launching another such project so quickly. [...]

[...] Maybe he’ll start his book….” [...]

[...] Her impression stemmed from the way Seth had called his material an “essay” tonight — which is something he hasn’t done before. [...]

(“Fiction” is the word Seth wanted here, he said when I interrupted the session to ask him.)

[...] Here each man works out his own destiny, and with the use of this dream information quite consciously chooses which episodes he will physically materialize and experience.

[...] It was — very much so: In material covering several pages, he discussed my mother and her recent experiences with probabilities in her advanced old age. [...]

[...] First had come her reactions to a group of upsetting letters she’d received this noon: One is a 20-page missive from a mental patient who wants returned to him all of the notes, objects, manuscripts, and books of poetry he’s sent her over the years: another is from a woman who informed us that she’s writing a book dictated by Seth: a third is a long letter from a man who’s claiming us as his counterparts, for reasons we can’t agree with. [...]

Now: Man needs the feeling that he is progressing, but technological progress alone represents a comparatively shallow level unless it is backed up by a growth of emotional understanding—a progression of man’s sense of being at one with himself and with the rest of the natural world.

[...] She told me that Seth had changed the beginning of the session because of her reactions to the mail this noon, but that finally he’d gotten into some of the material she’d picked up from him today, and written down. [...]
