“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

In reference to my book’s theme now, the basic dilemma as well as its reasons and development, was quite available in Ruburt’s conscious mind all of that time. [...]

The trouble is that when you refuse to deal with such quite available conscious problems, you begin to organize other pertinent material about the problem, and it also becomes taboo. [...] Because you will not face the material, you cannot counter it with other conscious ideas, or generate other emotional feelings that would help you.

The unacceptable conscious problem therefore collects great charges of correlated emotional feelings that also go unexpressed. [...] That helped release some of them, did therefore release him consciously, and lead directly to his later writing.

[...] Tam knew the purposes of Adventures from the beginning—as did Ruburt, but neither of them could act on that knowledge consciously, for it did not serve as yet their conscious purposes.

He lost confidence in the body as a result of his course, and lost trust in his conscious mind as it directs the body. [...]

[...] Naturally, left alone, his body and his mind both work fast, and there is nothing dangerous in that. [...]

[...] That is already established, but there is a great difference between improvement and the relatively complete physical freedom he can have, that will come as he realizes his conscious control over his body’s condition.

[...] The nature of your conscious mind demands change and dramatic meaning, a sense of power, and aspirations against which to judge individual direction. [...]

Now because of their knowledge and temperaments, they had already begun to play cards — to distract their conscious attention — and to drink wine to help reduce tension. Ruburt then went into an altered state of consciousness, and quite correctly foresaw their situation. [...]

[...] The reasons and the habits were all quite consciously available.

All of this had to do with past conscious decisions and responses to situations that, in your terms, no longer existed at the time of the flood. [...]

[...] It is the duty and challenge of the conscious mind to ascertain cultural reality—but cultural reality cannot supersede natural reality. [...]

[...] This is not only waste of time, but it adversely affects your creativity, and that frame of mind will never generate solutions, but only further difficulties in any area (emphatically).

You wondered in the secret depths of your mind how well-suited Ruburt was for the solitude you believed necessary to produce good work. [...]

[...] He now understands that retreat denies the responsiveness natural to the body, mind, and spirit.

(Long pause, eyes closed.) Any mental message is also received, in an electromagnetic code, and directly transferred, bypassing the conscious mind, into movement of the new temporary force field.

[...] Seth then came through, and in no uncertain terms told us to mind our own business. [...]

[...] The state of your own mind will have something to do with the type of personalities that you contact, the behavior of the tables and the messages that you receive. [...]

They do not have to be studied every day, but kept in mind. The entire rationale as expressed in some of those sessions concerning the rather paranoid tendencies of the conscious mind, should also be remembered. [...]

(9:20.) Ruburt, far more than other people, is involved in a life that utilizes conscious and unconscious activity, so that any dilemmas in that regard are certainly physically reflected. [...]

[...] Talking with you is highly important now, many of the feelings that the rigidity hid, you see, now come into consciousness—an excellent situation because they can be and are being encountered. [...]

Use your conscious mind and its logic. [...]

[...] I trust myself and my integrity,” if at the same time you are afraid of your own emotions and become upset whenever you catch yourself in what you think of as a negative frame of mind.

[...] A woman’s entire adult life can be structured according to such an idea if she does not learn to examine the contents of her mind. [...]

[...] The ideal in their minds becomes so great that they are always dissatisfied with their own performance yet they are afraid to make a start.

Even the conscious mind contains much more information about the structure of events than you realize you possess. [...]

[...] In about a half hour the same mental activity returned, and, finding himself struck by this, Ruburt mentioned the episode to Joseph and again cast it from his mind.

[...] been so much in Ruburt’s mind. [...]

[...] More is involved than the question: Did he perceive his information directly from the minds of his friends, or from the letter itself, which had already been mailed, of course, and was on its way to Ruburt at the time?

Also, Ruburt’s conscious mind is quite merry over your portrait award, and if you both are merry then I will join in the general enthusiasm.

[...] It is of course an enlargement or extension of the self, and a widening of the boundaries of the self, and therefore of even conscious comprehension.

All of this is intimately connected with your biological structure, which is meant to follow the conscious mind’s interpretation of reality. [...]

[...] On the other hand, it is quite true to say that many such questions turn into challenges with a change of mind, and are then used as impetuses to affect social alterations.

[...] Because of different personal characteristics, another individual will hold qualities of the mind, say, inviolate, and work out challenges through bodily illness. [...]

[...] Because body and mind operate so well together, one will attempt to cure the other, and will often succeed if left alone. [...]

[...] The conscious mind is quite equipped to interpret dream information.

13. The “constant interaction” that Seth mentioned as involving myself, Nebene, the Roman soldier, and the black woman, Maumee, obviously takes place on other-than-usual conscious levels — at least in my case, that is. [...] Now, however, as I write this I can at least feel ideas about them in the back of my mind….

[...] We estimate, then, that in a slightly altered state of consciousness Jane gave impressions for something like nine hours out of the actual ten and a half involved.

(I asked Jane to write a paragraph about the predominant mode of consciousness she’d experienced during the long session, and here’s what she produced:)

[...] Such dreams, however, can also be triggered often, as in your own times, when the conscious mind is convinced that the survival of the species is threatened—and in such cases the dreams then actually represent man’s fears. [...]

[...] As its physical growth takes place in the womb, so the shaping of its consciousness is also extended by genetic dreams. These particular fetus-oriented dreams are most difficult to describe, for they are actually involved with forming the contours of the individual consciousness. [...]

Genetic dreams of one kind or another continue throughout your lives, whether or not you are consciously aware of them. [...] Those dreams are most closely related to survival in physical existence, and whenever that survival seems threatened such dreams arise to consciousness whenever possible.

[...] These help form and direct consciousness as it exists in any given individual from before birth.

[...] Your world is composed of such “entities”—the units of consciousness that form your body. The kinds of conscious minds that you have cannot hold that kind of information.

[...] Each unit of consciousness, whatever its degree, is, again, composed of energy—and that energy manifests itself with a kind of light that is not physically perceived: a light that is basically, now, far more intense than any physical variety, and a light from which all colors emerge.

(Pause at 9:06.) So-called empty spaces, either in your living room between objects, or the seemingly empty spaces between stars, are physical representations—or misrepresentations—for all of space is filled with the units of consciousness, alive with a light from which the very fires of life are lit.

Now: On certain occasions, sometimes near the point of death, but often simply in conscious states outside of the body, man is able to perceive that kind of light. [...]

(For now, let’s postulate that Jane and I think we understand better than we used to that our consciousnesses have no limitations except those we’ve imposed upon them through our individual perceptions and understandings. Consciousness creates all, or all that we know reflects the particularized creations of consciousness, then, and potentially those sublime mental and physical achievements are without end. The idea of infinity is implied here — a concept whose implications make us uneasy, for although Seth’s material can be said to imply infinities of creation upon the part of each of us, still we realize the conscious mind’s inability to truly grasp all of the qualities inherent within such a notion.

[...] We do intend to spend the rest of our lives studying the ramifications of that “unique, still-growing view of consciousness.” We still have a host of questions about Seth’s reality, his concepts, and Jane’s role [and my own] in all of this — that is, questions about consciousness itself, basically: consciousness getting to know itself in endless variations, as I’ve written before, and whether or not it’s couched in physical form.

[...] These include works of poetry, fiction, and psychic matters as experienced from her own conscious viewpoint. [...] It’s safe to note, however, that now all of her work bears upon that unique, still-growing view of consciousness expressed by Seth and herself. [...]

(At the same time, Jane and I are extremely grateful that we have the opportunity to study ideas about consciousness with Seth, and this opening up of our individual realities is something we couldn’t have conceived of before 1963. [...]

Now these are powerful and “magical” statements, and as Ruburt made them mentally he could psychologically feel his agreement with any given one, and also the degree with which in the past he had not wholeheartedly accepted those abilities, but had set up certain restrictions about them—so a new flash in communication was set up, and new recognition came into his conscious mind. [...]

I would like to explain more clearly a few ideas that came to Ruburt concerning certain kinds of correspondents, and to explain more clearly some important issues regarding his own situation that also began to come into his mind. [...]

[...] Some people (pause) know very well that they have decided to die—or do not care (colon): they may “come down” with severe illnesses and then change their minds because for other reasons the very crises revive them.

Strange but inevitable, I think, how the conscious mind, developing such disciplines as biofeedback and astronomy (to use the examples considered here), finds itself led back to its own inner sources.

[...] Gadgets will, ultimately, teach you nothing about the dimensions of your own consciousness. When you use them (biofeedback, for instance) even to attain alterations of consciousness, you are programming yourselves, stepping apart from yourselves.

[...] In all of these cases you are ignoring the reality of consciousness, and its gestalt formations and manifestations. Until you perceive the innate consciousness behind any “visible” or “invisible” manifestations, then, you put a definite barrier to your own knowledge.

[...] In other words, unless the ideas behind objective science are altered, then gadget-produced altered states will almost certainly be used to manipulate, rather than free, consciousness.

[...] Play could also be used even in old peoples’ homes, for it could revive feelings of spontaneity and give the conscious mind a rest from worrying.

[...] By such mental games, however, stressing the desirable solution, children can learn at an early age to utilize their imaginations and their minds in a far more beneficial manner.

[...] Card-playing and family games such as Monopoly are actually excellent practices, and play in any form encourages spontaneity and promotes healing and peace of mind.

(4:29.) Some playful behavior on Ruburt’s part would be of considerable benefit — and this would be even better if the two of you could possibly indulge in some kind of play together, even if only mind games were involved — games with no particular purpose, except fun.

For you see, you think that you are only conscious when you are focused in physical reality. [...] In Freud’s terminology, the dice are indeed loaded, on the side of the conscious mind.

[...] Pretend that while you are in the dream state, you are concerned with the problem of consciousness and existence. From that viewpoint the picture is entirely different, for you are indeed conscious while you sleep.

[...] Let us speak no more of a conscious self and a subconscious or unconscious self. There is one self, and it focuses its consciousness in various dimensions, and that is all.

[...] In this particular section he told the reader that he suspected that Freud’s terms, the ego, or the conscious and the subconscious, had in themselves led you seriously astray. [...]

[...] I told Jane it would be a joke if those portions of the self we’re blaming for her condition, really are the truest, most simple and honest portions after all, and that their roles in bringing about her natural death were being subverted by our conscious-mind meddling and interference. [...]

[...] She changed her mind, in other words. [...]

The more actively and fully such a diversion can be indulged, the better, of course, and yet the mental playing of games can be quite fruitful, and serve to give the conscious mind a needed rest.
